Two schools under the Ministry of Industry and Trade have merged into one.

On May 26th, Deputy Prime Minister Le Tien Chau signed a decision to merge the College of Economics, Technology and Commerce into the University of Electricity under the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

According to the decision, the Prime Minister assigned the Ministry of Industry and Trade to direct relevant agencies and units to carry out the transfer and acceptance of students, personnel, finances, and assets of the College of Economics and Technology of Commerce into the University of Electricity under the Ministry of Industry and Trade in accordance with regulations.

The merger process must ensure the normal operation and protection of the legitimate rights and interests of all parties involved, preventing any negative consequences, financial losses, or waste of assets.

The Ministry of Education and Training and the Ministry of Industry and Trade are responsible for ensuring that the University of Electricity continues to train and award degrees to students currently studying at the College of Economics and Technology in accordance with regulations, guaranteeing the legitimate rights and interests of the students.

The Hanoi College of Economics and Technical Commerce originated from the Intermediate Vocational School of the General Department of Materials, established in 1961 with the mission of training and developing personnel in the materials sector. In 1965, the Intermediate Technical and Commercial School was established by separating from the Central Commercial School.

On November 24, 1990, the Ministry of Commerce decided to merge the Shanxi Commercial High School and the Materials Cadre School to establish the Central Commercial High School No. 1, responsible for training management and commercial personnel for many northern provinces.

In 1998, the Government upgraded Central Commercial High School No. 1 to the College of Economics and Commercial Technology.

The University of Electrical Engineering has its origins in the School of Practical Engineering, established in 1898.

Prior to the merger, the University of Power Engineering had 32 undergraduate programs, 10 master's programs, and 7 doctoral programs, with over 20,000 students.

The university aims to become a multidisciplinary, research-oriented, and innovation-driven university by 2035, with sustainable autonomy, leading the industry in several fields of energy and modern industrial engineering; and ranking among the top 100 universities in Southeast Asia in terms of competitiveness and ranking.
