On the afternoon of May 26th, speaking with Giao Thong Newspaper, Mr. Tran Thien Canh, Director of the Vietnam Railway Department, stated that the Chi Thanh tunnel (Tuy An district, Phu Yen province) continues to experience landslides, hindering the remediation efforts of relevant authorities. Therefore, the reopening date for trains is expected to be postponed.
Accordingly, around noon that same day, while workers were clearing the previously collapsed soil and transporting it out, another landslide occurred on the tunnel roof, with approximately 10 cubic meters of soil collapsing at each end of the tunnel.
"The amount of landslide material isn't significant, however, we felt unsafe so we stopped transporting the soil and rocks out and continued drilling anchors to secure the tunnel. The reopening of the tunnel is expected to be postponed for a few days," Mr. Canh shared.

Following the detection of further landslides, the Chi Thanh railway tunnel incident response team directly surveyed the landslide area and continued discussions on more effective solutions to address the problem.
Previously, on May 21st, a landslide occurred in the Chi Thanh railway tunnel, burying two service carriages under earth and rocks. The volume of soil that collapsed reached 260 cubic meters, and the area of the sinkhole was much larger than that of the Bai Gio tunnel in Khanh Hoa province, resulting in a much greater workload.
Following the landslide at the Chi Thanh railway tunnel, the leaders of the Ministry of Transport directed the Vietnam Railway Authority and related units to urgently rectify the problem and reopen the tunnel as soon as possible.
Over the past few days, Mr. Tran Thien Canh, Director of the Vietnam Railway Department, has been present at the scene to direct the work of khắc phục the landslide at the Chi Thanh railway tunnel.
By the morning of May 26th, relevant units had cleared approximately 80 cubic meters of landslide debris from the railway tunnel, and it was expected that the tunnel would be reopened today or tomorrow. However, a large amount of soil and rocks continued to slide down. Therefore, the initial plan to reopen the tunnel has to be postponed until the problem is resolved.
