President Lee Jae Myung's remarks came after data from the National Tax Service of Korea showed that since the establishment of the Real Estate Tax Evasion Reporting Center in November 2025 until the end of March 2026, the agency had received a total of 780 complaints. Analysis of the data revealed a very high concentration of real estate transactions, speculation, and suspected tax evasion, primarily in the capital region, where housing prices have risen sharply in recent years and remain one of the most sensitive socio -economic issues in South Korea.
President Lee's remarks are seen as a signal that the current administration may step up measures to combat speculation, strengthen tax inspections, and tighten real estate market regulation in the near future. This aligns with President Lee Jae-myung's long-standing view that economic growth should be based on innovation and labor productivity rather than profits from real estate ownership.
