For just 1,000 dong, laborers and those in need can become "VIPs" at a restaurant right in the heart of Hanoi – this is the information being passed around among workers in the Bach Dang area, Hoan Kiem district, Hanoi, as they share the hardships and difficulties in their lives.
Mr. Nguyen Anh Vu's generosity has created a special rice restaurant for the poor.
Mr. Nguyen Anh Vu – Founder of the Tam Thuong Charity Fund shared: “I want to share the burden with the people, as the cost of meals is increasing, making the lives of poor laborers even more difficult. While in the summer a meal consists of four main dishes, in the winter the menu is changed to eight dishes so that everyone can eat more and feel full. When people heard about it, many came and lined up to receive meals like in the old days of the subsidized economy. Every Monday noon, seeing so many people come makes me and the volunteers in the group even happier.”
The Tam Thuong Charity Fund has distributed hundreds of free meals costing 1000 VND each Monday noon.
Economic hardship adds to the burden on workers. The spirit of mutual support and compassion has long been ingrained in every child's book and in the everyday actions of the Vietnamese people. To share the difficulties faced by workers and the vulnerable, the Tam Thuong Charity Fund organizes a program selling hearty, nutritious, and hygienically safe meals for only 1,000 VND every Monday at 405 Bach Dang Street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi.
After 33 weeks of persistently carrying out the charitable meal program, those involved in the campaign have felt the warmth and necessity of these 1,000 VND meals reaching those in need.
Vietnamese dishes are prepared by chefs using fresh, seasonal ingredients, infusing each dish with their passion for culinary arts to offer to discerning diners. Meat, fish, vegetables, and fruits are all sourced from reliable suppliers, and food is prepared and used on the same day to ensure food safety and hygiene.
In early winter in Hanoi, meals made with carefully selected ingredients seem to share and dispel the harshness of the weather. "It's not the gift itself, but the way it's given"—this is a model of kindness and respect for the age-old Vietnamese values of "helping those in need."
Mr. Nguyen Anh Vu has been implementing this model since 2015, and to date, the value of the 1,000 VND meal has received the support of the local people.
According to locals, each meal costs only 1,000 VND but is so generous that the elderly women can even share it for two meals.
"A gift is a burden, a donation is a debt" - To eliminate the hesitation and embarrassment of receiving free meals, Mr. Nguyen Anh Vu - the founder of the Tam Thuong Charity Fund - said: "A little sharing from even the smallest actions of each individual can help society alleviate some burdens. For just 1,000 VND, laborers and those struggling to make ends meet can become 'VIPs' served attentively with respect and compassion by a restaurant located in the heart of Hanoi."
In particular, Vu always reminded the volunteer students to be polite, always listen, and empathize with those who came to buy the 1,000 dong meal.”
The Tam Thuong Charity Fund has previously undertaken charitable activities such as the "Journey Home for Tet" program and other activities to help disadvantaged and vulnerable people. The 1,000 VND meal program is also an annual activity launched by the fund at restaurants in Hanoi.
These flavorful Vietnamese dishes warm the hearts of workers during the cold winter days.
For 33 consecutive weeks, every Monday, this place has become a familiar destination, helping hundreds of struggling workers and people in difficult circumstances to buy restaurant-quality meals for just 1,000 dong.
It is understood that all proceeds from the sale of these 1,000 VND meals will be used for further charitable purposes. Besides those who purchased the 1,000 VND meals, there were also people who bought the charity meals and donated larger sums for charitable purposes.
Accordingly, at the end of December, the 5th "Connecting with Love" program will take place, organized by the Tam Thuong Charity Foundation along with other organizations, individuals, and volunteers, who will be accompanying a charitable trip to Co Lo village (Pa U commune - 138 households), Dau Nam Xa village (Bum To commune - 167 households), Nam Xa village (Bum To commune - 120 households), and Nam Phin village (Nam Khao commune - 89 households) in Muong Te District, Lai Chau Province. With an estimated donation of 700 million to 1 billion VND, including: 6 tons of rice, 520 large warm blankets, 1100 boxes of instant noodles, 520 mats, 520 bottles of fish sauce, 5200 packets of seasoning powder, 1100 kg of peanuts, 520 aluminum pans, 520 stainless steel pots, 520 aluminum basins, 520 kg of pork floss, 2000 servings of candy for children, 1100 children's life jackets, 2000 children's sweatpants, 520 bottles of cooking oil, etc., plus cash donations from benefactors.
In addition, the organizers are also calling for donations of used clothing to give to people and children in mountainous areas.
