Feelings that are difficult to put into words.
For the family of Mr. Nguyen Van Cham (born in 1993, Tay ethnic group) and Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong (born in 1997, Nung ethnic group), from Ha Giang province (now Tuyen Quang ), the five years of longing for a child was a time filled with pressure and emotions that are difficult to put into words.

For the first two years of their marriage, they had no children, and they thought everything was normal, so they didn't go for a check-up. In the third year, following the advice of relatives, they traveled to many places for treatment hoping to soon have good news. However, all their efforts were unsuccessful.
When they decided to go to a hospital in Hanoi for a check-up, they received the diagnosis that Mr. Cham had a very severe case of oligospermia, making natural conception impossible. The moment he heard the doctor's news, Mr. Cham was almost completely devastated.
"There were times I thought about letting my wife find new happiness," Châm recalled. But instead of giving up, Phương was the one who stayed by his side and encouraged him. She told him that if they couldn't have children, they would adopt and continue living together.
The years spent trying to conceive were also a time when the couple faced considerable pressure from insensitive questions from those around them. Every time someone asked when they would have a baby, they would choose to avoid the topic, appearing less frequently in public for fear of further questioning.
What made their journey to have a child even more difficult was their extremely challenging economic situation. In their family, Châm's brother had also been infertile for 10 years, and his mother had breast cancer, so every expense became a heavy burden.
"Our family is facing severe financial difficulties, but my older brother has been struggling with infertility for many years, so my wife and I decided to give him and his wife the opportunity for treatment first. We sold all our cattle to pay for in-vitro fertilization for my brother," Châm shared.
Fortunately, thanks to treatment at the Hanoi Andrology and Infertility Hospital, his brother's family was able to welcome a child. That story became the motivation for Châm and his wife to go to Hanoi for another check-up.
However, the results of their examinations remained unchanged. IVF was their greatest chance, but it was also beyond their financial means. Their income was barely enough to cover daily living expenses, forcing them to put their dream of becoming parents on hold and continue working.
The dream came true.
In 2024, you and your spouse learned about the "Golden Week - Nurturing Happiness" program organized by the Hanoi Andrology and Infertility Hospital. This is an annual community support program for underprivileged families struggling with infertility.
Filled with hope, they applied for a free IVF treatment package that covered 100% of the costs. They didn't dare expect too much, but then a miracle happened when Mr. and Mrs. Châm became one of the 15 families to receive support that year.

“When we submitted our application, we didn’t think we’d be selected. When we received the notification call from the hospital, my wife and I hugged each other and cried. If it weren’t for this program, I don’t know when we would have even dared to think about having children,” Châm recounted emotionally.
For them, the greatest value that Golden Week brings is not just financial support, but also the opportunity for families who had once given up hope to continue their journey to find their children.
The couple's IVF process went smoothly. Throughout the journey, Mr. and Mrs. Châm received constant support and encouragement from the doctors, nurses, and medical staff at the hospital.
Twelve days after the embryo transfer, both were overwhelmed with joy when the pregnancy test results came back positive. For the first time, Ms. Phuong and Mr. Cham experienced an emotion that Mr. Cham was too confused to name.
The pregnancy went smoothly, and the day his child was born became the most special moment in Châm's life. "Even now, thinking back, I still can't believe I've actually become a father," he said.
For Ms. Phuong, the journey of motherhood after many years of waiting has made her cherish every simple moment even more. From the first time she heard her baby's heartbeat and felt her baby kick, to holding her child in her arms after birth, everything has become a memory she never thought she would experience.
After all the difficulties and moments when they almost gave up, the couple said that the most precious thing now is watching their child grow up together every day. For Mr. Cham and Ms. Phuong, the opportunity from the "Golden Week - Nurturing Happiness" not only helped them have a child, but also helped a family that once struggled with economic burdens retain faith in the future.
From June 15th to June 28th, the Hanoi Andrology and Infertility Hospital is organizing the "Golden Week - Nurturing Happiness 2026" program with the theme "Helping Parents Take Flight". Accordingly, the hospital is offering free consultations, ultrasounds, semen analysis, ovarian reserve assessment (AMH) testing, and hysterosalpingography; a 20% discount on clinical laboratory tests; and a VND 5 million support voucher for in-vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures. Ten couples facing exceptionally difficult circumstances nationwide will receive 100% free in-vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment through a review process. The application period runs from May 28th to June 28th. |
