Through continuous effort and hard work, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hai (born in 1978, residing in residential area 5, Vu Quang town, Ha Tinh province) has developed a turmeric starch product that meets OCOP 3-star standards, opening up a large market and increasing her income.

Recognizing the growing trend of using all-natural products in healthcare, in early 2018, with her accumulated capital, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hai decided to embark on a large-scale business venture. She and her husband invested over 500 million VND in purchasing machinery and equipment, building a factory, and establishing the Hai Loi turmeric starch production facility in residential area 5 (Vu Quang town).

Speaking about how she came to this work, Ms. Hai said: “I realized that if fresh turmeric is only used in the traditional way, such as eating it fresh or using it normally, its full value will not be exploited. Therefore, I decided to learn and invest in deep processing to diversify products, meet consumer needs, and help increase the value of fresh turmeric.”

On average, Ms. Hai's facility purchases about 30-35 tons of fresh turmeric annually from farmers in the district and surrounding areas.

After the facility became operational and stable, in order to establish a foothold and expand the market for her products, at the end of 2020, Ms. Hai registered for training and prepared the necessary documents to build and develop the Hai Loi turmeric starch brand into an OCOP product. By early 2020, after several rounds of quality assessment, her family's turmeric starch product received a 3-star OCOP certification.

The fact that Hai Loi's turmeric starch products have achieved OCOP certification has helped Hai's family business access larger markets and stabilize sales. Previously, the products were only sold within the province, but now they are available in many places such as Hanoi , Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, and Can Tho. It is known that, on average, Hai's business purchases about 30-35 tons of fresh turmeric annually from farmers in the district and surrounding areas.

Each year, Ms. Hai's business generates revenue of over 700 million VND, resulting in a net profit of over 300 million VND after deducting expenses.

According to Ms. Hai, the process of producing turmeric starch is nothing special, but it requires patience and meticulousness. For each batch of powder, the producer must carefully select the raw materials, thoroughly prepare them, and carry out the extraction process ensuring the correct ratio and procedure.

Fresh turmeric, after being washed to remove soil, is peeled and then put into a grinding and pressing machine. The pulp is separated for about 10 minutes and then passed through a filtration system to remove impurities. After letting the turmeric powder settle for about 7-8 hours, it is filtered several more times to remove impurities, especially turmeric oil. Next, the batches of turmeric are freeze-dried for 3-5 days (at a temperature of 19-20 degrees Celsius) to allow the turmeric starch to dry slowly while preserving its characteristic flavor and nutrients.

Ms. Hai said: "On average, the facility produces 25 kg of pure turmeric starch per day (from 500 kg of fresh turmeric). Each year, the facility produces about 1.6 tons of turmeric starch, generating revenue of over 700 million VND. After deducting expenses, the net profit is over 300 million VND. Besides increasing my family's income, my facility also provides stable employment for 4 workers with an income of 6 million VND per person per month."

Ms. Hai participated in the OCOP market fair broadcast on Ha Tinh television to expand her market.

Not only has she become wealthy from turmeric starch production, but through her turmeric purchasing activities in the area, Ms. Hai has also contributed to making turmeric a commercial crop for farmers in the communes of Tho Dien, Huong Minh, and Vu Quang town...

Ms. Nguyen Thi Linh (residential group 5, Vu Quang town) shared: “Previously, turmeric plants grew naturally mixed with other crops in the garden. Since 2019, turmeric has been sustainably purchased by Hai Loi turmeric starch processing facility, so I have focused on commercial production. Currently, my family cultivates more than 1 hectare of turmeric in our garden, with a purchase price of 10,000 VND/kg, bringing in over 25 million VND in income each year.”

Currently, many local farmers are intercropping turmeric among their fruit orchards to improve soil fertility and increase income. This is a sustainable approach, and it is hoped that in the future, Hai Loi turmeric starch production facility will establish sustainable partnerships to encourage local farmers and those in neighboring areas to expand cultivation, contributing to increased income and a more stable livelihood.
