Consequences of neglecting oral hygiene.

VnExpressVnExpress08/03/2024

Neglecting oral hygiene leads to numerous health problems, affects the aesthetics of your smile, impacts overall health, and reduces your quality of life.

According to Dr. Nguyen Huu Nam from Kim Dental Clinic, neglecting oral hygiene and not having regular dental check-ups is a common problem in Vietnam. Currently, over 85% of children in our country suffer from cavities, and about 80% of adults face gingivitis and periodontitis. This leads to tooth loss, affects facial aesthetics, and is linked to overall health.

The doctor pointed out several consequences of tooth loss:

Difficulty chewing and digestive problems : Due to reduced chewing strength, food is not thoroughly broken down, forcing the stomach to work harder to process and metabolize nutrients. Over time, this can damage the stomach and make it prone to inflammation and ulcers.

Misaligned teeth and malocclusion : Because missing teeth create gaps in the jaw, adjacent teeth begin to tilt towards the missing tooth, and opposing teeth sag, altering the bite. Over time, this can lead to facial asymmetry, temporal pain, and jaw fatigue.

Premature aging : due to the rapid bone loss in the area where teeth are missing, the facial shape changes, such as sunken cheeks and sagging skin.

Causes other oral health problems : at the site of the missing tooth, the gums are unprotected and easily scratched and bleed. Misaligned teeth will create gaps where food particles can get trapped, allowing bacteria to accumulate and further cause other problems such as gingivitis, periodontitis, and bad breath.

"Bacteria from gum infections can travel into the lungs, causing acute bronchitis, infection, or pneumonia," the doctor explained.

Persistent toothaches can disrupt our lives, affecting our work and daily enjoyment.

Representatives from Kim Dental Clinic stated that delayed oral care can lead to serious consequences, affecting health in the long run and disrupting life. Fun with friends, sports activities, and work can be delayed due to troublesome toothaches.

When asked, "Why don't you have regular dental checkups?", most people will counter with, "Why go to the dentist when my teeth don't hurt?". The dentist explains that waiting until symptoms like persistent sensitivity, gum inflammation, chipped teeth, or large cavities appear before getting checked means the condition has worsened, requiring more time and money for treatment, and significantly increasing the risk of tooth loss.

Failure to detect oral diseases early will make treatment more complicated and costly.

Others say they don't go for checkups because they're afraid of the pain. According to a representative from Kim Dental Clinic, with the support of new equipment and technology (Cone Beam CT scanner, Piezotome ultrasonic wisdom tooth extraction, Bleach Bright teeth whitening...), the diagnostic and treatment process will be gentler and more comfortable, no longer a nightmare for many people.

In response to World Oral Health Day (March 20th), Kim Dental Clinic is launching the "Take Care of Your Teeth Now - Live Without Delay" program to raise awareness in the community and encourage everyone to take care of their oral health early.

"Develop good oral hygiene habits, have regular dental checkups, and address any related issues promptly. Only with a healthy and beautiful smile can you live life to the fullest, pursuing both your work and passions," a representative from the organization stated.

The program runs from March 6th to March 24th, offering discounts on teeth whitening, cosmetic dental veneers, and Invisalign clear aligners. All patients who visit during this period will receive a gift.
