Hezbollah fires rockets at Tel Aviv for first time

The Israeli military said Wednesday that it intercepted a surface-to-surface missile fired from Lebanon early Wednesday morning over Tel Aviv.

Hezbollah said it launched the missile with the intended target being Israel's Mossad intelligence agency, which Hezbollah says is responsible for the assassination of several of its leaders, as well as mass attacks on fighters' portable communication devices such as pagers and walkie-talkies.

The Hezbollah rocket launch set off air raid sirens in Tel Aviv and across central Israel. No casualties or damage were reported, as the rocket was successfully intercepted by the military.

The Israeli military said this was a response by Hezbollah after another senior commander, Ibrahim Muhammad Qabisi, head of the rocket and missile force, was killed by an Israeli airstrike in Beirut on Tuesday.

This is another blow to Hezbollah's leadership, which was already reeling from the loss of its senior military commander and head of the elite commando force Radwan last Friday.

These losses, along with sophisticated attacks that blew up thousands of portable communications devices and wounded scores of Hezbollah fighters, are raising tensions between Israel and Hezbollah to their highest level since 2006, and pushing the two rivals to the brink of all-out war.
