In the war against the enemy's advanced weaponry, barefooted, steel-willed troops marched across mountains and rivers, bravely fighting with unwavering determination. They are living symbols of revolutionary heroism, turning the slogan "Fight to the death for the Fatherland" into reality. Millions of soldiers fell on the battlefield. A soldier's greatest love is the love for their country. Some individuals have dedicated their entire lives to this sacred love. Colonel Huynh Tri, a Hero of the People's Armed Forces and former Head of Political Affairs of the An Giang Provincial Military Command, recounts the arduous and fierce battles he fought as a soldier in the reconnaissance squad of Battalion 512, An Giang Provincial Military Command, when he was sent to scout the enemy. However, upon reaching the field and seizing favorable conditions, he cleverly intercepted two vehicles carrying weapons, subduing the drivers and preventing them from transporting all the weapons back to the unit. In battle, there were victories but also losses and sacrifices. He can never forget the battle in Thanh Binh (Dong Thap) where he commanded 11 comrades in an ambush against the enemy. Between life and death, 8 comrades perished. His wounded comrade, named Kieu, still clutched a piece of paper with the lyrics of the song "Uncle Ho is marching with us" in his shirt pocket before he passed away. Later, Colonel Huynh Tri, a Hero of the People's Armed Forces, spent 20 years searching for hundreds of remains of fallen soldiers. Each fallen soldier brought back to their hometown is a touching story, deeply imbued with the bonds of camaraderie.

The war was fierce, but the soldiers fought bravely, without thinking about the day of return. In the memories of Lieutenant General Nguyen Tien Long, former Deputy Commander for Political Affairs of Military Region 3, he shared his experiences fighting in Laos from 1964 to 1973. As part of Battalion 51, Regiment 148, Division 316, Northwest Military Region, soldier Nguyen Tien Long and his comrades fought in the Plain of Jars-Xieng Khouang area. The fighting was intense, bombs raining down on the Phu Khut mountain range, over 1,000 meters high, lowering its altitude by many meters. Every meter of earth and rock was soaked with the blood of countless fallen comrades. This speaks of the ferocity and brutality of war. But everyone fought tenaciously, side by side with the Pathet Lao troops, to control the battlefield. Throughout history, the Vietnamese and Lao people have maintained a spirit of solidarity, friendship, and joint struggle against a common enemy.

The fiery memories shared by Colonel Huynh Tri, Hero of the People's Armed Forces, and Lieutenant General Nguyen Tien Long help today's generation to better understand the value of peace, independence, and freedom. Having endured the smoke and fire of war, our forefathers wrote a new chapter in history with their youth and blood.
Paying tribute to previous generations, Colonel Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Commander of Brigade 162 (Naval Region 4), expressed his emotion at meeting and listening to historical witnesses recount stories of sacrifice and dedication to the Fatherland. Colonel Vu Anh Tuan shared: “My father was a Hero of the People's Armed Forces, Colonel Vu Huy Le, captain of the ship HQ-505, Brigade 125 (Naval Region 2), who participated in the defense of the Truong Sa archipelago in 1988. I grew up listening to my father's tragic stories about the struggle to protect the sea and islands of the Fatherland. Inspired by his spirit, I followed in his footsteps and joined the ranks of the Vietnam People's Army. On my voyages carrying out missions, I am always proud to be the son of a hero, a naval soldier. That is the foundation that motivates me to resolutely fulfill my duty to protect the sacred sea and islands of the Fatherland.”

In keeping with the principle of "drinking water, remembering the source," the Party and State always show deep concern for policy beneficiary families, People's Armed Forces Heroes, and generals who have contributed to the revolution, demonstrating the gratitude and high responsibility of today's generation. Peace is not just a wish, but an aspiration, the very essence of life for the entire nation, preserved, protected, and promoted by generations of Vietnamese people. Peace is built with much blood and tears; therefore, the more we live in peace, the more we must cherish and value independence and freedom, and be grateful to our forefathers… To maintain that independence, freedom, and peace, our Party and State always prioritize building strong armed forces to meet the requirements of national defense in all situations.
