Every person is born with a destiny. For Le Thi Tham, that destiny was like a pitch-black night, without a single star. Her small house in Thanh Hoa province was shrouded in sadness when she was born without arms, weighing just over 1 kg, and afflicted with a series of illnesses: scoliosis, intestinal obstruction, and hip osteoarthritis. A beginning filled with tears and worries, seemingly destined for a life of acceptance and dependence.
For many, it might have been the end, a cruel verdict of fate. But for Tham and her family, it was the beginning of an extraordinary journey, where every step forward was a battle, and every effort made was a glorious turning point.
And on her journey out of that darkness, Tham was not alone; she still had her family – her father and mother by her side, comforting her, embracing, protecting, and believing in her despite the dire circumstances. It was this acceptance, love, and absolute trust that became the first ray of light, piercing through the darkness, nurturing a small flame in Tham's heart. Darkness may come, but surely dawn will soon break...

The flame – the burning will in the heart, an intense desire.
Difficulties quickly befell Tham when she started school. The absence of both hands and numerous health problems presented her with many challenges in life. Tham's school days were a struggle with the pen. She would hold the pen between her left toes, diligently practicing writing. Her tender toes became blistered and painful, but the flame of her thirst for learning never died. The image of a little girl lying face down, meticulously writing each letter with her feet, has been etched into the minds of those who have witnessed her extraordinary resilience.
At the age of six, while her peers were still playing and enjoying their childhood, Tham was already confidently attending the village school. She could write fluently and read both the alphabet and numbers. This wasn't a miracle; it was the result of relentless hard work. Every effort Tham made truly became a victory, empowering her to confront her cruel fate.
Throughout her 12 years of high school, Tham was always an excellent student, consistently ranking among the top in her class. Despite the difficulties in note-taking and participating in physical activities, she worked far harder than her peers to avoid falling behind. Every page of a textbook, every lesson, was meticulously studied by Tham with extraordinary willpower and effort. Her burning desire to stand on the podium, impart knowledge and dreams to future generations of students, was thus ignited and grew stronger in her heart.
"In my childhood memories and even now, I will always remember Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Ky. He was a role model who gave me the courage and determination to study hard. Like him, I don't have two hands, so I had to learn to write with my feet. Even though my feet were chafed and bleeding from practicing writing, I never gave up on my dream of going to school," Tham shared.
At some point, that flame ignited within her a dream of becoming a teacher. For Tham, becoming a teacher was not only about fulfilling a personal aspiration but also about proving that, despite physical disabilities, people can still achieve extraordinary things if they have enough willpower and determination.
Dawn breaks - light shines through and a career blossoms.
While still a student, Tham demonstrated her compassion and desire to contribute by opening free English classes for children in her neighborhood. These were her first lessons in sharing, in using her knowledge to brighten the future for those less fortunate. That spirit and enthusiasm have left a special mark on the community.

In 2018, Thắm's story of perseverance touched the hearts of those in positions of responsibility. She was specially recruited as an English teacher at Dong Thinh Primary and Secondary School in Dong Son District, Thanh Hoa Province – her hometown. The moment she stood on the podium, using her feet to control the pen and write on the blackboard, left her with a sense of wonder, a testament to willpower, and the kindness of society. It was not just a personal moment for Thắm, but also a symbol of compassion, fairness, and the fact that society always welcomes those with determination and talent.
