On the evening of August 23 in Phuket (Thailand), the Vietnamese women's volleyball team lost to Poland in the opening match of the 2025 FIVB Women's Volleyball World Championship. However, this was a successful match for coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet and his team because their opponent was the third-ranked team in the world.
"The athletes are really looking forward to this tournament. This is the first time Vietnamese volleyball has participated in a world tournament. It is a source of pride for the athletes. Winning one set against Poland is also very commendable," coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet said in an interview after the match.
The Vietnamese women's volleyball team played with great effort against Poland.
The Vietnamese women's volleyball team caused a big surprise in the first half. Against a superior opponent, coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet's students played evenly and broke away at the decisive moment, winning 25-23.
In the following rounds, when the opponents gradually got used to the rhythm of the Vietnamese team, the difference began to be clearly shown. Coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet's students only made things difficult for the opponents at a few points in the 4th set. The Vietnamese team saved 1 match point (the deciding point of the match) and shortened the score to 22-24, but could not prevent the opponents from winning.
"Through today's match, the athletes' confidence has increased greatly. The Polish team has a high ranking and a good line of blockers, but the Vietnamese athletes do not give up. They are confident in themselves and hope to have good matches in this tournament as well as in the future," added coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet.
Captain Tran Thi Thanh Thuy said: "We are very happy to have the opportunity to compete with the world's top teams. My teammates and I coordinated well and enjoyed this match. The Vietnamese women's volleyball team came here to learn. Competing with strong opponents helps us accumulate more experience for the future."
In the second match, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team will play against Germany - the 12th ranked team in the world. The match will take place at 5:00 p.m. on August 25.
