Why does Thanh Thuy play better than the German stars?

On the evening of August 25, the Vietnamese women's team lost 0-3 to Germany at the 2025 Women's Volleyball World Championship. Despite the defeat, captain Tran Thi Thanh Thuy still left a strong impression.

In this match, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team scored 56 points. Of which, Thanh Thuy alone scored 17 points, accounting for more than 30%. This is also the highest number of points scored by an athlete in this match.

German stars such as Camilla Weitzel (15 points), Hanna Orthmann (14 points), Lina Alsmeier (13 points) all scored lower than Thanh Thuy.

Going back to 2023, this number 17 will not surprise fans. But since 2024, Thanh Thuy's scoring in the team has decreased significantly. Part of the reason comes from persistent injuries that have caused her to lose the ability to get into momentum and finish. Another part comes from the change in role.

In the past, the point-carrying task was given to Bich Tuyen. Therefore, Thanh Thuy was assigned the main task of first-step defense and this made her unable to attack much. The proof is that in the opening match against Poland, Thanh Thuy only got 6 points while Vi Thi Nhu Quynh got 20 points.

But in the match against Germany, when the team was at a standstill, Thanh Thuy was forced to return to her attacking duties. And she immediately showed that class is forever.

Sharing with Tuoi Tre Online , Coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet highly appreciated Thanh Thuy's expertise and enthusiasm in competition.

He also admitted that the important adjustment decision, bringing Thanh Thuy back to an attacking role, was effective.

"Up to now, Thanh Thuy's contributions to the team have been great and valuable. No matter what position she plays, she is always ready. Previously, Thuy scored a lot of points because she played in a position other than the first setter, and was always given the best opportunities to play the ball. But when the team was weak in the first setter, she was willing to retreat to strengthen the back line, sacrificing herself for the team. That's why I always highly appreciate and have absolute trust in Thanh Thuy," Mr. Nguyen Tuan Kiet shared.

The Vietnamese women's volleyball team has been officially eliminated from the 2025 World Championship. However, they still have one group stage match against Kenya on August 27. This will be the last chance for Thanh Thuy and her teammates to have the joy of victory.
