Vietnam's final opponent at the world volleyball tournament: African champion, won a spectacular set against Poland

Kenya, the 2023 African volleyball champion, will be the final opponent of the Vietnamese women's volleyball team at the 2025 Women's Volleyball World Championship. This team has strengths that coach Tuan Kiet needs to pay attention to.

The 2025 Women's Volleyball World Cup is witnessing fierce confrontations, with surprises appearing one after another. In particular, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team impressed when winning a set against Poland - the third-ranked team in the world. However, Vietnam's final opponent in Group G, Kenya, was no less strong when creating an impressive match against Poland and winning a set on the evening of August 25.

Both Vietnam and Kenya have run out of chances to enter the round of 16, but in the final round, neither team will lose their fighting spirit because both sides want a victory to say goodbye to the tournament.

Kenya – the aspiring African volleyball champions

Kenya are currently ranked 23rd in the world and are the 2023 African champions. They have participated in their seventh Women's Volleyball World Cup, with their best results being top 13 finishes in 1994 and 1998. The Kenyan women's volleyball team, dubbed the "Malkia Strikers", is playing very hard and has many bright faces, including 7 athletes who have participated in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Kenyan players faced financial difficulties before arriving in Thailand when their salaries were delayed and the Volleyball Kenya Federation resolved the issue just before the tournament started, allowing the players to compete with more peace of mind.

Spectacular match with Poland

In the match against Poland on the evening of August 25, despite losing 1-3 overall, Kenya made a strong impression by winning a set (15-25, 25-17, 15-25, 14-25). The highlight of Kenya was Veronica Adhiambo, who scored 18 points (15 attack points, 2 block points, 1 ace serve point). This was the first time Kenya won a set against Poland at this tournament.

"We had nothing to lose today, so we came here to fight," Adhiambo shared after the match. "Our goal was to win one or two sets and we did it. I believe if we play better today against Vietnam, we can win that match," she confidently said.

Kenya is known for its physical style of play and excellent jumping ability. However, the team still lacks consistency in matches against the world's top teams, as shown in the 0-3 loss to Germany. Captain Meldinah Sande commented after the loss to Germany: "We prepared well and hoped for a better result. The goal is to win or at least win a set against strong teams."

The confrontation is predicted to be evenly matched.

Kenya will meet Vietnam in the final match of Group G. Although it is just a formality, this is a match in which both sides will try their best for honor and pride.

Coach Tuan Kiet is proud of his student on his first trip abroad: 'This is a valuable experience'

If Kenya has Veronica Adhiambo, Meldinah Sande, Vietnam also has stars who are playing well such as Thanh Thuy, Vi Thi Nhu Quynh. Kenya is only 1 place below Vietnam in the world rankings but is considered to have a better physical foundation and coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet and his team will definitely want to settle the match early in 3 to 4 sets. After the match with Germany, coach Tuan Kiet also affirmed that the Vietnamese team came here to seek at least 1 win.

The match between the Vietnamese women's volleyball team and Kenya will take place at 5:00 p.m. on August 27 (Vietnam time) and at 8:00 p.m. on the same day, Germany and Poland will determine the first and second place in Group G.
