On the evening of January 9th, the Vietnam U23 team secured a 2-1 victory against Kyrgyzstan in their second match of Group A at the 2026 AFC U23 Asian Championship. With this result, the Vietnam U23 team has high hopes of advancing to the knockout round after two consecutive wins.

This achievement also helps coach Kim Sang-sik extend his remarkable record with Vietnamese youth football. Excluding friendly matches of the U22 or U23 teams (when the Korean coach temporarily handed over the reins to his assistant), Kim has won every official match he has directly coached the Vietnamese youth teams.

Specifically, in the U23 Asian Championship qualifiers, the 2025 U23 Southeast Asian Championship, the 33rd SEA Games, and currently the 2026 U23 Asian Championship finals, the teams led by Coach Kim have yet to lose a single match. In the U23 Asian Championship qualifiers, Vietnam U23 won all 3 matches, scored 4 goals, and convincingly secured their place in the finals.

On their way to winning the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship, the Vietnam U23 team successively defeated Laos 3-0, Cambodia 2-1, the Philippines 2-1, and overcame Indonesia 1-0 in the final to claim the title.

At the 33rd SEA Games, the Vietnam U22 team won the gold medal with a perfect record. They defeated Laos 2-1 in the opening match, beat Malaysia 2-0 in the second match, defeated the Philippines 2-0 in the semi-finals, and beat Thailand 3-2 in extra time in the final (the two teams drew 2-2 after regular time).

At the 2026 AFC U23 Asian Championship, the Vietnam U23 team got off to a good start with a 2-0 victory over Jordan, before going on to beat Kyrgyzstan 2-1. With these positive results, fans expect Coach Kim's team to go far in this year's tournament.
