Chris Richards (in the red shirt) suffered an injury just before the 2026 World Cup. |
The US national team is going through a tense period as Chris Richards, one of Mauricio Pochettino's most important players, is uncertain to recover in time for the 2026 World Cup. The Crystal Palace defender tore two ligaments in his left ankle during the match on May 17th. Although he has joined the national team, Richards will continue to be monitored and evaluated by the medical team.
Manager Mauricio Pochettino couldn't hide his concern when talking about his player's situation. The Argentinian strategist admitted that the coming days will be crucial in determining whether Richards will be ready for the World Cup.
"He needs more time. We will continue to monitor and evaluate him before making a final decision," Pochettino said.
The US team's anxiety is understandable. Richards is currently considered the most complete center-back in the American squad. He possesses top-level Premier League experience and is a crucial link in the defensive system that Pochettino is building.
The problem is that the US doesn't have many quality options at this position. Besides captain Tim Ream, names like Auston Trusty, Mark McKenzie, and Miles Robinson haven't provided the same level of reassurance. If Richards is unavailable, Walker Zimmerman or Tristan Blackmon are likely to be called up as replacements.
Notably, this isn't the first time injury has threatened Richards' World Cup dreams. The 26-year-old center-back previously missed the 2022 World Cup due to a hamstring problem.
The US national team will finalize its official roster on June 1st and still have the right to make personnel changes due to injuries until June 11th. For now, Richards will definitely miss the friendly match against Senegal and will be racing against time to be fit for the biggest soccer event on the planet.
