According to the disciplinary announcement from the English Football Association (FA) on May 18th, Klopp will initially be banned from managing one match. The remaining match will be suspended until the end of the 2023-2024 season, provided the German coach does not repeat the offense.

Therefore, Klopp will not be in charge when Liverpool play Aston Villa in the 36th round of the Premier League tomorrow, May 20th. He will return for the final match of the season against Southampton on May 28th. Liverpool are currently fifth with 55 points, one point behind Man Utd and four points behind Newcastle.

Klopp was fined for comments targeting referee Tierney after Liverpool's 4-3 win against Tottenham at Anfield on April 30th. At the post-match press conference, the 55-year-old manager claimed Tierney intended to give him a yellow card for his goal celebration and that the referee was biased against Liverpool.

Following Klopp's statement, the Professional Referees' Organization (PGMOL) announced that Tierney "always worked professionally throughout the match" through the communication system and a full review of the recordings. Therefore, PGMOL rejected the Liverpool manager's statement that the English referee made "inappropriate remarks".

An independent governing body ruled that Klopp's statements constituted inappropriate conduct because they implied bias, questioned the integrity of the referee, were personal, offensive, and made the match "notorious".

However, the Liverpool manager avoided a heavy penalty by expressing remorse at a subsequent press conference on May 2nd and in a letter sent the following day in response to the FA's accusations.

Speaking to the media, Klopp admitted that he shouldn't have overreacted, and that his actions stemmed from being swept away by the emotions and anger of the match. In the letter, the former Dortmund coach also apologized for his excessive celebration in front of fourth official John Brooks and admitted to making "inappropriate comments" about Tierney.

In October 2022, Klopp was fined nearly $40,000 and banned from the touchline for one match for his inappropriate behavior toward assistant referee Gary Beswick during Liverpool's 1-0 Premier League win over Manchester City at Anfield.

In February 2019, the German coach was fined $50,000 for accusing the referee of bias, stating that Kevin Friend consistently favored West Ham in one-on-one challenges during the 1-1 draw in London.
