In Vietnamese, surnames are not only indicators of origin and family but also carry significant cultural and historical value. Most Vietnamese people have common surnames such as Nguyen, Tran, Dinh, Le, Pham, Hoang, etc., ranging from 2 to 7 letters. However, there are also some extremely short surnames that surprise many people.

Considering the number of letters in the current Vietnamese writing system, some of the shortest surnames consist of only two characters, such as Âu, Vi, Lò, or Y. These are all real surnames found in certain ethnic communities in Vietnam.

Furthermore, among the phonetic transcriptions of the names of some ethnic minorities such as the Ede, Gie Trieng, and Mang, there is a particularly short surname, H'. This surname is usually used for females and consists of only one letter accompanied by an apostrophe. This is considered one of the shortest surnames ever to appear in Vietnamese, in terms of written form.

Besides extremely short surnames, Vietnamese also has many double surnames or rare surnames with a considerable length, such as Ton That, Cong Tang Ton Nu, or Sa Quy. This shows that the surname system in Vietnam is very diverse, reflecting the cultural characteristics of many different regions and ethnic groups.

Although there are no official regulations confirming what constitutes the shortest surname in Vietnamese, surnames consisting of only one or two characters always pique people's curiosity due to their uniqueness and rarity.
