Supporting farmers in sustainable rice production.

In order to help farmers use rice-growing land effectively, cultivate using proper techniques, improve production efficiency, and protect the ecological environment, the An Giang Agricultural Extension Center is successfully implementing its plan to support rice growers in 2024.

The 2024 rice farmer support plan aims to promote the application of scientific and technological advancements, reduce production costs, and create safe rice products that meet market demands. This will contribute to increased income, raise farmers' awareness of high-quality, safe rice production, reduce environmental impact, and move towards green and sustainable agriculture . This also serves as a basis for the agricultural sector to implement and expand the Project on Sustainable Development of 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice monoculture linked to green growth in the Mekong Delta by 2030.

The plan aims to mobilize 10 cooperatives and cooperative groups to participate in the model, covering a total area of 50 hectares. Specifically, it seeks to achieve a maximum rice seed sowing rate of 80 kg/ha; a minimum profit margin of 30% for rice farmers participating in the model compared to traditional farming; a minimum mechanization rate of 50%; and approximately 40% of the area will have straw collected from the fields. Simultaneously, it aims to improve the knowledge of 1,800 farmers, both within and outside the model, through the organization of 60 training courses and 10 workshops on advanced techniques in rice production.

Farmers receive technical support for producing high-quality rice.

The An Giang Agricultural Extension Center has implemented integrated models applying advanced techniques in commercial rice production, including: a model using a 3-in-1 drone for sowing; and a model using cluster sowing equipment for sowing in Tan Chau town, Tinh Bien town, and Thoai Son district. In the autumn-winter 2024 and winter-spring 2024-2025 seasons, the total area implemented was 350 hectares. The models received support including 50% of the 3-in-1 drone equipment, 50% of certified seeds, 50% of inorganic fertilizers, and 30% of pesticides.

As a result, the cost of the model plot was 4.6 million VND/ha lower than the control plot, due to reduced seed, fertilizer, pesticide, and labor costs during production. The average profit of the plot using drone equipment reached over 29.7 million VND/ha, approximately 5.9 million VND/ha higher than the control plot. By participating, farmers had the opportunity to attend training sessions, receive guidance, and update their knowledge on high-quality, low-emission rice cultivation processes, mechanization application processes, and advanced techniques in production. This contributed to changing farmers' perceptions of mechanization and improving production efficiency.

Using cluster sowing equipment, the An Giang Agricultural Extension Center implemented 3 models covering a total area of 150 hectares in the 2024 autumn-winter crop season in Thoai Son district. The models received support covering 50% of the cluster sowing equipment, 50% of certified seeds, 50% of inorganic fertilizers, and 30% of pesticides. As a result, production costs in the model fields were more than 3.4 million VND/ha lower than the control fields. Average profit reached over 24.7 million VND/ha, more than 4.6 million VND/ha higher than the control fields.

Farmers participating in the model also receive updates and introductions to technical advancements and the use of technological equipment from sowing to harvesting in rice production; the content and procedures for implementing current rice production standards, such as: "1 must, 5 reductions", SRP, the process of granting planting area codes, technical procedures for producing high-quality, low-emission rice, etc.

Overall, the models implemented in the 2024 Rice Farmer Support Plan have helped farmers see that applying technological advancements and mechanization in production brings practical benefits, reducing production costs while still ensuring productivity and profitability compared to traditional farming. In addition, it helps farmers limit direct exposure to harmful chemicals, protecting the health of producers and consumers, and reducing environmental pollution.

Based on the results achieved, the An Giang Agricultural Extension Center proposes continued support for the implementation of commercial rice production models that comprehensively apply mechanization and integrate advanced technologies into production, such as: the "1 must, 5 reductions" process combined with ecological technology; the process of producing high-quality, low-emission rice; and the application of microbial preparations to treat straw after harvest, along with training farmers on this technique.

Furthermore, it is necessary to replicate the model; intensify propaganda through newspapers and social media to encourage farmers to actively participate in high-quality rice production, contributing to improving the quality and value of An Giang rice in the market.
