- In recent years, taking advantage of the abundant food sources, many households in Hoa Tham commune have developed white horse breeding. This model has initially proven effective, opening up prospects for economic development for the people.
As one of the households developing horse breeding in the commune, Mr. Hoang Van Soan, from Ban Nghiu village, said: Recognizing the high economic value of raising white horses, since 2024, his family has invested in two white horses for breeding. Thanks to proper care, the herd has grown and increased annually. To date, the family has increased the herd to 11 white horses. From 2025 to the present, the family has sold two horses, bringing in nearly 60 million VND in income. In addition, the family has also invested in planting 5 acres of elephant grass to ensure a food source for the horses.

Not only Mr. Soan's family, but according to statistics, to date, the entire commune has 30 households developing white horse breeding with a total herd of over 120 horses. The household with the most horses has 15, while those with the fewest have 2 to 4. Even those with the fewest horses earn 40 million VND/year or more, while those with the most earn 400 million VND/year. Horse breeding is thriving in villages such as Ban Nghiu, Ban Chu, Na Pan, Pac Khiec, etc. According to breeders, white horses over 5 months old can be sold for between 20 and 25 million VND/horse; mature white horses (8 months or older) sell for 30 to 40 million VND/horse. Breeding white horses can fetch up to 50 million VND/horse.
Mr. Ly Van Thang, Vice Chairman of the Hoa Tham Commune People's Committee, said: Hoa Tham commune has many potentials and advantages for developing livestock farming, especially white horses. Since 2022, people in the commune have begun to expand and develop white horse farming in a commercial direction. To ensure the stable development of the horse herd, the commune government has directed specialized units to organize 2 to 3 training courses on integrated breeding techniques, disease prevention and treatment, and horse care; and to promote and encourage breeders to actively plant elephant grass to create an abundant food source for the horses. In addition, with the support of the State, many poor and near-poor households in the commune have received support in the form of white horses to develop production. From the end of 2025 to the present, 12 poor and near-poor households in the commune have received support in the form of white horses under the National Target Program for socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas, with a total of 20 horses.
In addition, the Party Committee and the local government of the commune have also created the best possible conditions for people to receive interest rate support for loans from Resolution No. 08 dated December 10, 2019, of the Provincial People's Council on specific policies to encourage investment, development of cooperation, and linkages in the production and consumption of agricultural and rural products in the province during the 2020-2025 period.
Mr. Hoang Ngoc Huy from Na Pan village shared: "In 2022, after being informed about the interest rate support program under Resolution 08, my family was guided by commune officials to complete the procedures and paperwork to borrow 500 million VND to expand our livestock farm, invest in a hay grinder and cutter, and raise 15 white horses. The loan from this program is very practical and helps my family confidently develop production. Accordingly, my family mainly raises white horses (4 to 5 months old) and sells them to traders, reinvesting the capital to continue raising horses. Currently, on average, my family sells 8 to 10 white horses per month, earning about 40-50 million VND per month after deducting expenses."
Thanks to the proactive efforts of the people and the attention and guidance of the Party committee and government, the model of raising white horses in Hoa Tham commune, a particularly disadvantaged area, has been increasingly replicated. This has contributed to opening up new economic development opportunities, diversifying livelihoods, and helping people increase their income and become wealthy in their homeland.
