Strive for a once in a lifetime exam

Although she has worked at Ha Tinh General Hospital for nearly 10 years, when mentioning the residency exam, Master, resident doctor Hoang Thi Hanh - Deputy Head of Endocrinology Department still cannot help but remember that difficult, challenging and stressful training period.

Realizing her dream of becoming a doctor, in 2006, Ms. Hoang Thi Hanh passed the entrance exam to Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy. After 6 years of hard work and study, Ms. Hanh graduated as a general practitioner in the joy and pride of her family and relatives. It seemed that Ms. Hanh would soon graduate and have a stable job, but she made a special decision, which was to take the residency exam at Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Sharing about her decision, Dr. Hoang Thi Hanh confided: “Although I know that the residency exam is extremely difficult, and surviving is even more difficult, this is a once-in-a-lifetime exam so I don’t want to miss it. At that time, the criteria for taking the residency exam were that students had just graduated, graduated with a good degree or higher, were under 30 years old and were not married. All of those strict criteria were for the sole purpose of ensuring that students could fully focus on their majors and have the time and energy to study.”

With her efforts in studying, Dr. Hoang Thi Hanh passed the residency exam of Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy, specializing in internal medicine. From then on, the 3-year journey of training in a harsh learning environment officially began.

“I had already imagined the level of hardship when studying for a residency, but when I officially started studying, I really felt the harshness. Studying in the morning, practicing and treating at the hospital in the afternoon, and being on duty at the hospital in the evening. That 3 sessions a day without a break was repeated over and over again throughout the 3-year journey. Although studying with a large amount of specialized knowledge, it was not as stressful and difficult as practicing and participating in treatment. Being able to practice under the direct guidance and instruction of teachers who are leading experts in their field is both a privilege and a blessing for all doctors studying for a residency, but it is also a great pressure because the teachers will have stricter and more stringent requirements than usual to train doctors with solid skills,” Dr. Hanh shared.

After 3 years of hard work and studying in harsh conditions, in 2015, Dr. Hoang Thi Hanh officially graduated as a resident physician. After graduating, with a Master's degree and residency, Dr. Hanh could have found a suitable position at a higher-level medical facility, but she decided to return to her hometown and join the Provincial General Hospital. This was a choice that surprised Dr. Hanh's teachers, friends, and family.

Master, resident physician Hoang Thi Hanh shared: “The biggest reason I returned was to be close to my family and take care of them after a long time away from studying. Each decision is appropriate to each individual situation. On the other hand, when I decided to return, I also wanted to contribute a small part to the care and treatment of my hometown people.”

Never forget “Match Day” 2017

After Master, Doctor Hoang Thi Hanh, Doctor Nguyen Thi Minh Quy - Department of Rehabilitation also joined the Provincial General Hospital after graduating as a resident doctor. In 2011, Doctor Quy officially passed the Hanoi Medical University entrance exam. After 6 years of studying, in 2017, she officially graduated as a general practitioner. Instead of going to work right away, Doctor Quy decided to challenge herself by taking the resident doctor exam of Hanoi Medical University.

Sharing about that decision, resident doctor Nguyen Thi Minh Quy said: "Although the exam and residency are very harsh, this exam takes place right after graduation and is only once in a lifetime. If I go to work, I will no longer have the opportunity, so I don't want to miss it."

With his ability and efforts, Dr. Quy, along with hundreds of other doctors, passed the rigorous residency exam of Hanoi Medical University.

“In 2017, we started to switch to the format of taking the exam first and choosing a major later. From there, the concept of “Match Day” officially began. In my class at that time, the number of candidates taking the exam was about 600 people and only about 300 people were selected. After passing the exam, each candidate was called by the name of the major they were studying. For me, that was the most memorable “Match Day” of my life, because it decided my entire career later when I chose the rehabilitation major.”

After choosing rehabilitation as her major, Dr. Nguyen Thi Minh Quy began a 3-year journey of "forging the fire". According to the doctor, in the first months, students focus on studying theory, then during the day they practice and receive treatment at the hospital with the guidance and supervision of teachers, and at night they are on duty at the hospital.

“With teachers who are leading experts in the field directly supervising and guiding patients in treatment, students acquire a lot of in-depth knowledge, but on the contrary, teachers also set very high and strict requirements for students. And this pressure will last throughout the 3 years of study. If anyone cannot overcome it, it is easy to give up, but if they can overcome it, it is glorious” – resident doctor Nguyen Thi Minh Quy shared.

Recently, many doctors from Ha Tinh have successfully passed the residency exam of Hanoi Medical University. Photo: Tran Duc Huy achieved the highest score among candidates from Ha Tinh and ranked 10th nationwide in the residency exam of Hanoi Medical University.

Overcoming the pressure, in 2021, Dr. Nguyen Thi Minh Quy graduated as a resident physician. After graduating, without hesitation, Dr. Quy immediately chose to work at Ha Tinh Provincial General Hospital. “For many people, this may be a surprising decision, but for me, it was very natural. Because from the beginning, participating in the exam and studying for a residency was to challenge my limits, to seek more knowledge and specialized medical skills. When deciding to work in my hometown to be closer to my family, the most important thing is that the work will be more suitable for me, not too stressful or chaotic" - resident physician Nguyen Thi Minh Quy confided.

Today, following in the footsteps of Dr. Hanh and Dr. Quy, many doctors in Ha Tinh, after graduating from university, have successfully passed the residency exam at prestigious medical universities to continuously improve their own capacity and contribute to the mission of caring for and protecting people's health.
