People's Artist Le Chuc: Reading the comments with pride, experience and empathy

People's Artist Le Chuc

During the Vu Lan season of filial piety in 2025, the art program "Parents' Grace " is not only a special cultural meeting place, but also a place where deep gratitude is expressed to parents and mothers who sacrificed for the Fatherland.

Inherited from parents love of art, responsibility for the profession

+ Dear People's Artist Le Chuc, how do you perceive the meaning of the art program "Grateful Parents 2025" organized during Vu Lan season of filial piety?

For me, 2025 Grace of Birth is not simply an art program. It is also the crystallization of emotions, of deep gratitude for mothers, generations who have silently sacrificed for the Fatherland. The artists do not only come here to perform, they also represent the heartfelt gratitude raised through art, sincere and touching.

Throughout the program, the image of the Vietnamese Mother - the Mother of the Fatherland - will be portrayed emotionally, touching the deepest layers of the viewers' emotions. She is a symbol of sacrifice, resilience and boundless love for her children, her homeland and her country.

+ To you, what is the significance of the image of the mother in art and in life?

Mother is the source of poetry, the stream of music, the image that goes into every folk song, lullaby, becoming the material that nourishes the souls of many generations of artists.

I was born in 1947, now I am almost 80 years old. When my mother gave birth to me, the war forced her to evacuate to many places. I was the only one of 10 siblings to be breastfed directly. When I grew up, I was fortunate to inherit many good qualities from my mother.

My father has a very good voice, as does my mother. They are both intellectuals, and their Vietnamese pronunciation is very standard. My mother's voice is strong, deep, resonant, and expressive. Every time she speaks, everyone is captivated.

In 1996, my father passed away, I felt very empty because I lost a solid support. In 2005, my mother also followed my father. They passed on to me the love of art, awareness and responsibility for the profession.

The karma of "speaking"

+ For many generations of Vietnamese people, People's Artist Le Chuc is a "legendary voice", "just listen once and you will see the difference". For you, how did your relationship with the "speaking" career begin?

My family name is Le, my hometown is Tho Xuan (Thanh Hoa), but I grew up in a central area where "n" and "l" are mixed, Hai Phong . Yet in my voice and language there is not a single syllable of the dialect of the provinces or cities, that is probably a gift from heaven from the very first days.

People's Artist Le Chuc was born in 1947 in Hai Phong in a family with a rich artistic tradition. His father was poet and playwright Le Dai Thanh. His mother was the first person to successfully portray Vo Thi Sau on the Hai Phong stage in 1956. In 1965, he became the main actor of the Hai Phong Drama Troupe. In 1987, he graduated from the University of Theater and Cinema in Kiev (now Ukraine). He served as Deputy Director of the Department of Performing Arts and Permanent Vice President of the Vietnam Stage Artists Association.

I always keep in mind "Oh, the Vietnamese language, I am forever indebted to " (poem by Luu Quang Vu). To me, Vietnamese is not only a professional tool, but also a heritage, an important cultural value. I think, if my reading voice has anything special, it is a mandate from God. Among millions of Vietnamese speakers, there are voices chosen to become representatives. I am aware that I must maintain that standard.

Over the years, I have read for hundreds, thousands of programs, in all sectors. When people call me, they often say: "I hope you can help me." I answer, this is no longer a help , it is the responsibility of a person who has received God's grace. That is also the meaning of my speaking Vietnamese correctly.

+ According to you, besides the tone, what makes your voice touch the hearts of so many audiences and listeners?

As I said, my family tradition instilled in me a love of art, a passion for reading and learning. 6 years of studying in the Soviet Union and a rigorous training system in my country further trained me to stick with the profession. I went to the battlefield, experienced many different jobs, from being a worker to leading positions in the industry. That is why I read the comments with pride, with experience, and with empathy.

The ultimate goal of a reader of a poem, essay or article is to be inspired. However, to be able to inspire the public, first of all, the reader must be able to "feel" what is in it. At the time we receive a text, it is something outside of us. When we speak, it is something that comes from our soul, from our own emotions.

"My husband and I live simply, without frills."

+ He also said: "It is necessary to clearly distinguish between profession and career…"

That's right! A career is a job to earn a living, to have income to support yourself and your family. A career is a reason to live, a destiny. I chose the career of an artist and firmly believe that I was born to follow that path.

Some people say I am a 200% artist, because I always work with all my heart, responsibility and knowledge. I never think about the money I receive. If I do, I will give that money to the poor and disadvantaged people in society.

For many years, my husband and I have lived a simple, unpretentious life, but our home has always been open to those in difficult circumstances.

+ At nearly 80 years old, how do you maintain your health and voice to continue contributing to art?

I have a small habit. Every night, I brush my teeth and rinse my mouth with salt water made from coarse sea salt. Besides, I pay attention to keeping my feet warm. Because the voice point is located in the feet, if my feet are cold, it will be difficult to maintain my voice.

+ Thank you for sharing, People's Artist Le Chuc!
