Trend reversal
Vietnamese reality TV was once a “gold mine” for ratings, where audiences eagerly awaited each episode to watch the heated debates, conflicts and dramas between contestants. But by 2025, this trend is reversing. Audiences are gradually moving away from dramatic “fake-real” shows, moving towards more positive and healthy content.
The new season of “Vietnam’s Next Top Model 2025” is a typical example of the decline of the “view-baiting tricks” motif. After many years of existence thanks to the old formula - staged conflicts, shocking statements, controversial challenges, the program seems to no longer attract the attention of the audience. Although the producer tried to “renew” with conflict situations between judges and contestants, between contestants, the media effect was lackluster. Comments on social networks showed that most viewers felt “bored”, thinking that the tricks were outdated.
The interaction rate of behind-the-scenes clips, teasers and episodes of this program on YouTube platform is not high. Hashtags related to the program are no longer in the top trending as before, reflecting the changing tastes of Vietnamese viewers.
Not just stopping at modeling contests, reality show Comedy, travel and light survival are also facing similar backlash. Recently, episode 81 of “2 days 1 night” was heavily criticized after member Le Duong Bao Lam wrapped his face in plastic wrap. This is considered offensive and potentially dangerous if imitated by children. Many viewers believe that some TV shows are now lacking in sophistication, trying to create ridiculous “highlights” instead of focusing on quality content.
When audiences look for positive values
At the same time that "noisy" programs are losing their appeal, audiences are turning their attention to programs that are healing, humane, or honor human efforts.
One of the most talked about phenomena recently is “Haha Family” - a program revolving around warm, humorous and close moments between artist members. No arguments, no staging, “Haha Family” creates a true feeling of relaxation after tiring working hours.
Viewers found there sincerity, gentle laughter and messages about family love. In addition, a series of programs that test intelligence and strength such as “Stars join the army” or “Brave soldiers” also received positive feedback. Not only entertaining, these programs also inspire positive living, helping young people understand more about discipline, strong will and team spirit.
In particular, the recent season of "Sao nhap ngu" has seen a sharp increase in online viewership, with clips of behind-the-scenes training, harsh challenges, and touching moments between artists and soldiers all spreading rapidly on social networks.
This shift shows a new trend of Vietnamese reality TV in 2025: Audiences no longer watch to “gossip”, but watch to find true emotions and spiritual balance. After a period of crisis of confidence in showbiz due to too many scandals and tricks, the public is returning to core values - sincerity, simplicity and humanity.
It can be seen that “the time of tricks is over”. To survive, producers must understand the psychology of viewers and create more realistic content, instead of relying on drama to “feed the airwaves”.
In fact, “healing” programs not only attract viewers of all ages but also become a bright spot in post-pandemic television culture. In the context of modern life with many pressures, viewers need space to relax, laugh and feel kindness. That is why light-hearted, positive programs are gradually dominating prime time.
