A science lesson for 7th graders.
In his address regarding the tasks for the new school year, Dr. Nguyen Van Hieu, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, mentioned the opinions of students in Ho Chi Minh City at a meeting with city leaders on June 1st. According to Dr. Hieu, there were "approximately 30 opinions from students regarding the natural science subject, expressing dissatisfaction and difficulties in acquiring interdisciplinary knowledge."
Therefore, the head of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training has requested that schools not assign teachers to teach if they have not undergone training or participated in supplementary training on teaching natural sciences. Mr. Hieu said that since 2019, the department has been working professionally with Saigon University to implement an integrated natural science subject. Teachers in the city have received training and continue to participate in advanced training sessions to teach this subject.
"How can we help teachers gain confidence when teaching integrated subjects, without fragmenting knowledge or delving into separate subjects like physics, chemistry, and biology as before? In the near future, the city will continue to organize specialized training courses to enhance the teaching of natural sciences, helping teachers and students achieve the desired results. Ho Chi Minh City will continue to persevere and maintain its integrated teaching approach, with one teacher teaching a subject throughout, meeting the objectives of the 2018 General Education Program," Mr. Hieu emphasized.
The principal did not choose the company or partner to organize the program.
Dr. Nguyen Van Hieu delivered a speech giving directions for the new school year.
From the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year, principals need to pay attention to selecting supplementary activities for the school program. These activities must be conducted openly, transparently, democratically, and voluntarily. Under no circumstances should students be forced to attend classes with foreign teachers.
If this situation occurs, the principal will be held responsible. All supplementary activities must be voluntary, allowing students to register for groups of activities or supplementary subjects, and the school will assign classes according to parents' wishes. It must be ensured that all students participate in the program voluntarily…
Schools must listen, create opportunities, and provide guidance so that students can study subjects that match their strengths and desires.
The school principal does not choose the company or partner to organize the school program; instead, they must develop supplementary activities in professional development, English, computer skills, and digital skills. Parents choose whichever group they prefer, and then select guest teachers and collaborating organizations from there.

The gifted student competitions for grades 9 and 12 will include many new subjects.
At the conference, providing information on some new content for the 2024-2025 school year, Mr. Tran Ngoc Huy, Deputy Head of the Secondary Education Department, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, informed that in early October, Ho Chi Minh City will have local education materials for grades 9 and 12 to facilitate teaching in schools.
Regarding the city-level gifted student exams for 9th and 12th graders in the new school year, the head of the Secondary Education Department informed that there will be some new subjects to be tested in accordance with the 2018 General Education Program.
Specifically, the 12th-grade gifted student exam will include a new subject: economic and legal education.
The Grade 9 gifted student exam will include Natural Sciences and History-Geography because the 2018 General Education Program for lower secondary schools no longer includes physics, chemistry, biology, history, and geography as separate subjects.
"The Grade 9 Science Olympiad exam will consist of two parts: compulsory and optional. The compulsory part, assessing students' general abilities across various content areas, accounts for 30% of the total score, while the optional part allows students to choose one of several content areas related to their abilities, such as chemical transformation or life processes, accounting for 70% of the total score. The Science Olympiad team will consist of 45 students per locality," Mr. Tran Ngoc Huy informed.
