At the recent Provincial High School Student Excellence Exam for 12th graders, Nguyen Van Troi High School (Mai Phu commune, Ha Tinh province) achieved a remarkable feat when Nguyen Phuong Thuy and Tran Thi Lan Anh, both from Dai Lu village (Hong Loc commune) and students in class 12A7, excelled, winning top positions in Literature and History respectively. The story of these two female students is not only a source of pride for the school but also a vivid testament to the extraordinary efforts and aspirations for knowledge of the youth of Ha Tinh.
For Nguyen Phuong Thuy, it wasn't until she entered 12th grade that she officially joined the school's Literature gifted student team. This was a challenging journey for a "newcomer" to the team, requiring far greater willpower and effort than those who had been pursuing the subject earlier. Nevertheless, under the kind and dedicated guidance of her teacher, and with her own diligence and unwavering willingness to listen and learn, Phuong Thuy reaped the rewards with a proud score of 15.3.
“The moment I learned I had achieved the top score, I burst into tears of emotion. This is the sweet reward after nearly a year of intensive studying and working much harder than my classmates. I want to express my deepest gratitude to my tutor and my family for always believing in me and providing all the conditions for me to pursue my passion. This achievement is not just a title, but also an affirmation that, with true determination, the door to success will always be wide open,” Phương Thùy shared.
For this year's exam, the part that Phương Thùy appreciated the most was the social commentary essay on the topic: Open-minded thinking of young people in today's life.
“I believe that modern society requires young people to have a multifaceted perspective, to be open to new ideas and to adapt in order to develop. I have tried not only to analyze the importance of open-mindedness, but also to point out the barriers and ways for young people to overcome ingrained ways of thinking. This essay is not just an exam, but also my voice, my sincere concerns about my generation,” Thuy shared.
Revealing her study methods, Phuong Thuy shared: “I don't just memorize, but always try to delve deeper to understand the essence of the problem, connecting knowledge to real-life situations. Most importantly, I find my genuine feelings towards the work or the event, and then use my own words to express them in the most natural and coherent way. This helps me avoid being confined to a rut and create my own style.”
According to Phuong Thuy, to write a good essay, students need to cultivate the habit of reading books and newspapers, and regularly update themselves on social news, because social commentary is where book knowledge and sensitivity to life are combined. She always considers writing an essay as a conversation, a sincere sharing, rather than a stressful exam.
It was Phương Thùy's utmost seriousness and dedication during her preparation that helped her complete the exam flawlessly, with 21 pages. This number not only demonstrates her fluent expression but also proves the depth of her accumulated knowledge. Thanks to her complete, emotionally rich, and persuasive work, she excelled and secured the top position in Literature.
Commenting on her young student, Ms. Luyen Quynh Nga - the literature teacher who coached her - shared: “Phuong Thuy is a student with rare determination. She joined the team late but has made remarkable progress. The most valuable thing about her is her humility, her eagerness to learn, and her willingness to listen to feedback. Her essay demonstrates independent thinking, rich emotions, and depth, worthy of the top student title she has worked hard to achieve.”
Love History with Mind Maps and with Your Heart
Sharing the joy of being the top student with her friend from the same village and class, Tran Thi Lan Anh excellently secured the top position in History with an impressive score of 17.3 in the Provincial Excellent Student Examination.
Lan Anh shared: “When I received the results, I was both surprised and incredibly happy. This is not only my achievement but also the pride of my family and teachers. For me, History is not a dry subject, but an endless stream of stories and valuable lessons left by our ancestors. I thank my teachers for breathing life into each event, helping me to love history with all my heart.”
Lan Anh shared that to achieve this outstanding result, she had her own study secrets. “I didn't study by rote memorization of numbers and events, but used mind maps to connect timelines, linking events and characters into a logical system. This helped me grasp the essence, understand the cause-and-effect relationships and historical context, making my work more insightful and persuasive,” the student revealed.
According to Lan Anh, besides studying in class, she also spends a lot of time reading specialized books, watching documentaries, and even talking with older family members to better understand local and national history. It is this passion and multifaceted approach that has helped her transcend the limitations of conventional textbooks.
It is known that the two top-scoring female students, Phuong Thuy and Lan Anh, both come from farming families in Dai Lu village, Hong Loc commune. The hardships and hard work of their parents have fueled their determination and independent spirit in their studies.
Commenting on the two outstanding students in his class, Mr. Phan Van Duc - homeroom teacher of class 12A7, shared: “Phuong Thuy and Lan Anh are not only academically excellent but also exemplary and sociable students. They are a great source of pride for the class and the school. They have proven that starting point is not as important as effort and aspiration to excel. Their success will be a great motivation for future generations of students at the school.”
With their achievements, Lan Anh and Phuong Thuy are striving to pass the entrance exam to Hanoi University of Education. “We aspire to become excellent teachers, so we can pass on our knowledge and passion to future generations of students. Our dream of returning to our hometown to work, contributing to the cause of education, and continuing the tradition of studiousness in Ha Tinh, is the motivation for us to continue studying and improving ourselves,” the two female students shared.
The 2025-2026 Provincial High School Student Excellence Competition for 12th graders was a resounding success for Nguyen Van Troi High School, with 26 students winning awards. Notably, the school achieved two first prizes, both top scores in the province, along with eight second prizes, six third prizes, and ten consolation prizes. Furthermore, the school's teachers and students are proud of the achievement of 100% pass rates for five teams: History (6/6 students winning awards), Mathematics (4/4), Literature (3/3), Physics (3/3), and Chemistry (4/4).
