"Four anti-ship ballistic missiles were launched from Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen into the Red Sea. It is estimated that at least three of the missiles were aimed at the Danish-owned commercial vessel MT Pollux."

"There have been no reports of damage or casualties from the MT Pollux or any other vessels in the area," the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement.

On February 16 (local time), US forces conducted self-defense strikes, intercepting an anti-ship cruise missile and a mobile unmanned surface vessel (USV) in Yemeni waters.

Since mid-November 2023, Houthi forces have repeatedly attacked commercial ships passing through the Red Sea, aiming to express solidarity with the Palestinians amid escalating Israeli-Hamas conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The Houthi forces, which control much of Yemen's Red Sea coast, have also warned of their intention to attack ships linked to Israel, and have called on other countries to bring their crews back to land and stay away from the Red Sea region.

The Houthi movement stated that they wanted to help Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and insisted that the action was not intended to interfere with freedom of navigation in the region. Several shipping companies decided to suspend traffic through the Red Sea following the Houthi announcement.

Houthi attacks disrupted global shipping on this vital sea route. The US-led coalition launched numerous attacks to counter Houthi actions.

On February 16, Abdul Malik al-Houthi, the leader of the Houthi forces in Yemen, asserted that the attacks on cargo ships in the Red Sea were intended to show solidarity with the Palestinians in their conflict with Israel.

Speaking on television, this figure asserted that the Houthi Islamic movement would continue to support the Palestinians despite US and British attacks on Houthi facilities in Yemen in “response” to Houthi attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea.
