One day in late October, in the chilly weather with a light drizzle, we visited the Reconnaissance Battalion, the main unit in carrying out A2 missions and other unexpected missions of the Hanoi Capital Command. To fulfill its assigned tasks, the Battalion always maintains serious, disciplined, and in-depth training, ensuring that its soldiers are proficient in specialized reconnaissance tactics and techniques, especially in marksmanship, martial arts, swimming, and the skillful use of all weapons and equipment in their inventory; ready to mobilize and perform missions in all situations, operating effectively both day and night.

This requires the unit's officers and soldiers to have a good physical foundation, meeting all three criteria of "speed, strength, and endurance." Aware of this, the physical training movement in the Battalion has been enthusiastically embraced by the troops. We witnessed that, by the eighth hour, throughout the Battalion, officers and soldiers were participating in pull-ups, parallel bar push-ups, weightlifting, football, volleyball, martial arts, swimming, and other exercises.
Lieutenant Nguyen Trong Tan, Commander of Detachment 4, Company 2 of the Special Reconnaissance Unit, confided: “Our detachment has always thoroughly implemented the Battalion’s plan to build a model unit for excellent physical training. Through initial assessments, most soldiers already know how to swim, but only short distances or freestyle, with limited swimming technique. Therefore, we have decided to make a breakthrough in improving the quality of swimming training for our troops. This is crucial for ensuring the success of the comprehensive training exercise, as well as for future reconnaissance and combat missions.”
To effectively implement the above content, the unit made thorough preparations in terms of personnel, lesson plans, and training materials. The training process closely combined theory and practice, organizing training segments on land first, then in water, with officers closely monitoring the soldiers throughout the training. After each training session, results were assessed and solutions were implemented to improve the skills of those who were still weak. With these comprehensive and decisive measures, 100% of the soldiers in the platoon now know how to swim the breaststroke correctly and can swim long distances. Many soldiers achieved good or excellent results in the assessment, and the soldiers' physical fitness meets the requirements of training, work, and the fulfillment of assigned political tasks.
To ensure that the unit-building program yields practical results and creates a ripple effect throughout the unit, the Battalion Party Committee and command have thoroughly implemented the Hanoi Capital Command's plan for building a comprehensively strong, exemplary, and outstanding model unit and a unit excelling in physical training by 2025. Based on this, the Battalion has developed a scientific plan and organized its serious implementation.

Major Lam Xuan Dat, Deputy Battalion Commander of the Reconnaissance Battalion, shared: “We have learned many valuable lessons in building model units for excellent physical training. First and foremost, Party committees and commanders at all levels must pay attention to, lead, and direct the development of scientific physical training plans that are relevant to the target group and comply with regulations and procedures. The training process must classify and group the trainees to avoid overexerting the troops and overcome the problem of superficiality. In particular, physical training should be linked to emulation movements, competitions, and sports tournaments, constantly promoting the physical training movement within the unit...”
The excellent results achieved in physical training have significantly contributed to the Reconnaissance Battalion's successful completion of assigned tasks, especially training. The unit's 2025 training inspection results showed that 100% of the subjects met the requirements, with over 85% achieving good or excellent grades.
