During the 2024-2025 winter-spring season, Hung Long 555 rice variety has been asserting its position in the Mekong Delta and Southeast regions thanks to its superior yield, good rice quality, and good resistance to pests and diseases.
Having been approved for circulation in these areas by the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection since July 2024, Hung Long 555 quickly became the preferred choice of many farmers.
Hung Long 555 has a growing period of 95-100 days, a plant height of 94-107cm, sturdy stems, and compact, upright leaves, making it suitable for various soil types. Notably, Hung Long 555 rice does not germinate on the panicles during prolonged rain and has a low grain shedding rate when ripe. In the 2024-2025 winter-spring crop in An Giang , Hung Long 555 achieved a yield of 9.6-10.4 tons/ha. The rice quality is highly rated, with a white rice percentage of 95.7%, an amylose content of 16.2%, and soft, flavorful cooked rice, meeting the requirements of the export market.
Mr. Huynh Cong Nhiep from Binh Hoa commune, Chau Thanh district, An Giang province said: “I have been cultivating this rice variety for the fourth season now. In previous seasons, I only cultivated on 8 hectares, but this season the area has increased to 30 hectares. Hung Long 555 has high yield, stable selling price, and especially good resistance to pests and diseases, especially blast disease.”
Over four seasons, I haven't seen any signs of rice blast infection in my rice fields. In this year's winter-spring crop, after harvesting, the rice yielded 1.2 tons per 1,300m2 plot, equivalent to nearly 10 tons per hectare. Hung Long 555 rice has export potential thanks to its good quality, soft texture, and rich flavor, meeting the requirements of demanding markets.”

According to many other farmers, Hung Long 555 was developed to adapt to difficult farming conditions, especially with its resistance to pests and diseases such as leaf blast, neck blast, leaf blight, and brown planthopper. This rice variety has been successfully grown from North to South with yields ranging from 10 to 12 tons of fresh rice per hectare, and even up to 13 tons of fresh rice per hectare in the Central Highlands.
With its outstanding advantages in yield, rice quality, pest and disease resistance, and cost savings, Hung Long 555 is becoming a reliable choice for many farmers. At the same time, this rice variety contributes to promoting participation in the 1 million hectare high-quality, low-emission rice project in the Mekong Delta.
Meanwhile, in the Southeast region, during the 2024-2025 winter-spring crop season, farmer Dang Van Tum, in An Phu hamlet, An Hoa commune, Trang Bang district, Tay Ninh province, boldly planted 3,000 m2 of Hung Long 555 rice variety. As it was his first time planting, he was still cautious about the new variety, and although the amount of fertilizer wasn't exactly as instructed, and the plot was uneven with water loss at higher angles, the results were excellent.
Mr. Dang Van Tum said that initially, after receiving 40kg of Hung Long 555 rice seeds, which are copyrighted, produced, and supplied nationwide by the International Agricultural Seed Corporation (IAS), he trusted the seeds and decided to try them out. After soaking and sowing on December 22, 2024, the rice germinated and grew very evenly. Throughout its growth process, the Hung Long 555 rice field produced good tillers (reaching 320-340 panicles/tiller), showed good resistance to pests and diseases, and was not infected with blast or leaf blight.
Throughout its growth period, the Hung Long 555 rice variety cultivated at the farm of Mr. Dang Van Tum in An Phu hamlet, An Hoa commune, Trang Bang district, Tay Ninh province, produced good tillers (reaching 320-340 panicles/tilleron), showed good resistance to pests and diseases, and was not infected with blast or leaf blight. The rice plants flowered uniformly, with very large panicles, and were fully filled with grain (an average of 165-170 filled grains per panicle, with large panicles around 300 grains). The actual yield from the trial plot reached 2,591 kg of fresh rice, equivalent to 8.6 tons/ha.
The total time from sowing to harvesting is 101 days, suitable for the local season, comparable to common varieties such as OM 18, Dai Thom 8, OM 5451… At harvest, the leaves retain their vibrant yellow-lemon color, the rice does not lodge, and the plants are strong and upright.
At a rice variety evaluation workshop, before dozens of farmers in An Hoa commune, Trang Bang district (Tay Ninh province), Mr. Le Ngoc Anh, the creator of the Hung Long 555 variety, shared: The Hung Long 555 variety has been granted a circulation decision for 6 out of 7 ecological zones nationwide with circulation code: CNLH.2022.89 and granted protection certificate number 17.VN.2022 on December 15, 2022. The variety has high yield potential, good intensive cultivation reaching 11-12 tons/ha of fresh rice, good resistance to pests and diseases, especially low susceptibility to blast and bacterial leaf blight, good rice grain quality (6.97 mm long grain), Amylose around 16% depending on the region and season.
With a white rice content exceeding 97%, the cooked rice is soft, flavorful, and rich in taste. Besides provinces in the Southeast region such as Tay Ninh, Dong Nai, and Ba Ria - Vung Tau, the International Agricultural Seed Corporation is currently collaborating with purchasing agents in the Central Highlands and the Mekong Delta to develop concentrated raw material areas. With advantages in disease resistance, high yield, good quality, and adaptability to various soil types and seasons, Hung Long 555 promises to bring even greater benefits to rice farmers in the future.

Therefore, it is a preferred rice variety for farmers in the Mekong Delta and Southeast Vietnam, who cultivate and expand its use in subsequent seasons. Photo: Le Hoang Vu.
As someone who understands the characteristics of Hung Long 555 best, Mr. Anh advises farmers cultivating this variety to pay attention to fertilization according to the instructions on the packaging and the actual growth of the rice field. In particular, phosphorus fertilizer should be applied at approximately 20-25 kg DAP/1,000 m2 or 20-25 kg Super Phosphate/360 m2 (Northern Vietnam standard) to support root development. Especially in the summer-autumn crop in the South and the main crop in the North, applying phosphorus fertilizer as a base dressing will help the soil's microbial ecosystem develop, contributing to the decomposition of straw residue and preventing organic poisoning in the rice plants. It also fixes iron and aluminum, stabilizes soil pH, and maximizes fertilizer absorption by the plants.
The Hung Long 555 rice variety has proven its potential and effectiveness in agricultural production in the Mekong Delta and Southeast Vietnam. With high yields, good rice quality, and resistance to pests and diseases, Hung Long 555 not only brings economic benefits to farmers but also contributes positively to the sustainable development of Vietnam's rice industry.
