From the war against the US to the days of peace , he has captured tens of thousands of moments of his homeland.
Over several decades, with hundreds of journeys across the length and breadth of Vietnam, he captured countless beautiful landscapes and feelings of pride in each photographic moment. The 260 photographs in "Colors of Vietnam's Ethnic Groups" are a part of the fruits of a lifetime's work by photographer Van Ngoc Nhuan.
The book is divided into six parts, with the themes: the Kinh ethnic group, the ethnic groups of Northwest Vietnam, the ethnic groups of the Central Highlands, the Cham ethnic group, the Hoa ethnic group, and the Khmer ethnic group. In each part, the author has selected many photographs, taken over the years, documenting his journey of discovering and preserving the beauty of the landscapes, cultural life, labor, and production of the ethnic communities of Vietnam. From the vibrant traditional costumes of the H'Mong and Thai people to the unique religious rituals of the Cham people or the simple, intimate lifestyle of the Khmer people...
Journalist Vu Thong Nhat shared that the book is a multifaceted cultural portrait, reflecting the life, customs, and beauty of various ethnic communities. Each photograph tells a unique story about the identity and origins of each ethnic group. “With his professional eye and deep experience, photographer Van Ngoc Nhuan has harmoniously combined documentary and artistic elements, portraying people with respect, closeness, and humanity,” said journalist Vu Thong Nhat.
From a cultural perspective, researcher Nham Hung assesses that this is not simply a photo book, but through each page, it clearly demonstrates the efforts of a veteran and dedicated photographer to preserve cultural values that are gradually changing in the face of modern life.
