French football legend Bernard Lacombe has died at the age of 72. |
His passing leaves a huge void not only in the hearts of fans but also in the history of French football.
Lacombe is one of the most prolific goalscorers in French football history. In his 18-year career, he scored a total of 304 goals in 592 matches, making him the second-highest goalscorer in the history of the French Ligue 1.
Wearing the "Les Bleus" jersey, Lacombe made 38 appearances and scored 12 goals, most memorably scoring against Italy after just 30 seconds at the 1978 World Cup - the fastest goal ever scored by a French player at the biggest football tournament on the planet.
But Lacombe's greatest legacy with French football is his participation in the 1984 European Championship-winning team – France's first major continental title. After retiring from playing in 1987, Lacombe continued to contribute in coaching and management, leading Lyon from 1996 to 2000 and later serving as a close advisor to president Jean-Michel Aulas in building Lyon into a powerhouse of French football.
Lyon, the club with the longest and closest relationship with Lacombe, issued a touching statement: “We are deeply saddened to learn of Bernard Lacombe’s passing. He was our legend, the greatest of all time. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and loved ones.”
Bordeaux, the club where he played from 1979 to 1987, also expressed their sorrow: “A legendary striker who left a profound mark on the club’s history with his talent and generosity. The entire Marine et Blanc family mourns today the loss of one of the greatest players in our history. Thank you, Bernard.”
The President of the French Football Federation (FFF), Philippe Diallo, praised Lacombe as a complete role model of a player and a footballing professional: “Bernard is one of the greatest strikers in the history of French football. He played a crucial role in taking the national team to new heights and building a football empire with Lyon. He is an inspiration to many generations to come. We will hold solemn memorial ceremonies to pay tribute to him.”
On social media, fans everywhere also expressed their deep sorrow. "A legend of French football has passed away," "He was a legend, a true warrior of Lyon," "Rest in peace, Bernard! Thank you for everything..." were some of the reactions from fans.
With a brilliant career and noble character, Bernard Lacombe was not only a legend, but also the embodiment of passion and loyalty to the beautiful game – an irreplaceable part of French football history.
