In its new video teardown, iFixit gives both the Surface Pro 11 and Laptop 7 a repairability score of 8/10. While that's not a perfect score, it's the highest repairability score ever for a Surface device, especially when you consider the 2013 Surface Laptop's repairability score of 0/10, which iFixit gave it—the worst ever. For comparison, Apple's latest MacBook only received a 3/10 repairability score.

As for why the new Surface devices score so highly, iFixit says there are a number of factors that make them easy to repair. The Surface Laptop 7 is easy to open, with the back panel held in place by four screws and a set of magnets. Both devices feature modular components, easily replaceable batteries (held in place without glue), and relatively roomy internals.
“Overall, we’re extremely pleased with Microsoft’s continued commitment to repairability. The Surface line of devices has made such a remarkable and rapid transition from unrepairable to highly repairable that we can’t help but be impressed, even if they don’t score a perfect 10/10,” iFixit said.
Microsoft also released repair instructions for these Surface devices on launch day, which is quite unusual. According to the information, users do not have to do much to find repair parts from Microsoft. Simply scan the QR code inside either device and users will be taken to the appropriate repair instructions.

Apple may have been the first to successfully produce and sell an ARM-based laptop, but the company has struggled with ease of repair, so Microsoft’s efforts to improve repairability are commendable.
This is just one step in a long journey, where Microsoft began to show interest in repairability after releasing its e-waste sustainability report in 2021. Just a few months later, it assembled a “Design for Repairability” team to collaborate with hardware engineers and even sell official repair parts through iFixit. In 2022, the company released its first official repair video for a Surface device, which scored high repairability scores.
