According to Reuters, Iranian police announced the arrest of three suspects accused of plotting terrorist attacks during the week ending Ramadan.
One of the three suspects is Mohammad Zaker, also known as Ramesh, a senior member of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS). The other two suspects were arrested in the Karaj region, west of Tehran. Security forces had previously opened fire to subdue them at the scene. Eight other suspects present at the same location as the IS members were also arrested in the operation.
ISIS claimed responsibility for two bombings in Kerma, southeastern Iran, earlier this year that killed nearly 100 people and injured many others. The group targeted the fourth anniversary of the death of General Qassem Soleimani, commander of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Previously, in 2022, IS claimed responsibility for an attack on a Shiite shrine in Iran that killed 15 people. IS also claimed responsibility for the 2017 double bombing targeting the Iranian parliament and the mausoleum of the founder of the Islamic Republic, Ruhollah Khomeini.
