Israel has carried out air and ground attacks against Hamas militants in Gaza, killing 15,000 Gazans, according to Gaza's health authorities.
This attack was carried out in retaliation for the Hamas attack in southern Israel on October 7, which killed 1,200 people and took 240 hostages.
The Turkish President's office said that in a call ahead of the UN Security Council meeting on Gaza scheduled for Wednesday, Erdogan and Guterres discussed "the international community's expectations regarding Israel's illegal attacks," the issue of delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza, and efforts to build lasting peace .
“During the call, President Erdogan stated that Israel continues to shamelessly trample on international law, the laws of war, and international humanitarian law right before the eyes of the international community. This state must be held accountable for the crimes it has committed.”
The Turkish Foreign Ministry announced that Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will attend the UN Security Council meeting in New York.
In a statement, the ministry also said that Fidan would meet with his counterpart in the group on relations with Muslim countries, established this month by the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to discuss Gaza with Western powers and other nations.
Türkiye has strongly criticized Israel's attacks in Gaza and called for an immediate ceasefire to allow for discussions on a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Erdogan described Israel's attacks in Gaza as acts of genocide and accused Israel of being a "terrorist state." Israel has rejected these accusations, asserting that it is defending itself against a hostile faction seeking to destroy it.
Türkiye has also welcomed some Hamas members and does not consider the organization a terrorist group, unlike the US, the European Union, and some Gulf states. The country has accused the West, aside from Spain and Belgium, of complicity due to their support for Israel.
