Israel launched at least five airstrikes on the southern outskirts of Lebanon's capital Beirut early on October 2 as the country's military announced it was targeting Hezbollah sites and issuing several evacuation orders.
Since last week, Israel has repeatedly bombed the southern suburbs of Beirut, a densely populated Hezbollah stronghold. The airstrikes came after Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said on the night of October 1: “The air force continues to operate at full capacity, and tonight (after the Iranian attack), they will continue to strike hard in the Middle East, as they have done throughout the past year.”
Mr Hagari vowed to take action against Iran after it launched a missile attack on Israel, saying Tehran was pushing “the Middle East into a state of escalation”.
Meanwhile, the European Union (EU) has condemned “in the strongest terms” Iran’s ballistic missile attack on Israel and called for an immediate ceasefire across the Middle East.
On social network X, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell warned: “The dangerous cycle of attacks and retaliation risks... getting out of control,” and called for: “An immediate ceasefire across the region is needed.”
In a related development, world oil prices increased by about 3% in the trading session on October 1, after Iran launched a series of missiles targeting positions in Israel.
At the end of the trading session, the price of North Sea Brent crude oil increased by 1.86 USD, or 2.6%, to 73.56 USD/barrel. Meanwhile, the price of US light sweet crude oil (WTI) increased by 1.66 USD, equivalent to 2.4%, to 69.83 USD/barrel. Previously, in the same trading session, both types of crude oil increased by more than 5% at times.
According to analysts, Iran's oil production and export facilities are likely to be the target of Israeli retaliatory attacks. If this happens, it could cause serious disruption to oil supplies and potentially reduce Iran's production by more than 1 million barrels per day.
