According to Mr. Phung Viet Vinh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Bac Quang district (Ha Giang province), as of the afternoon of September 29, heavy rain and strong winds causing flash floods and landslides in the district have resulted in at least 11 casualties.
Among them, 2 people died and 3 are missing (an increase of 1 compared to the midday report), and 6 people were injured (while trying to escape the flash flood and landslide).
The People's Committee of Bac Quang district also reported that 39 houses were damaged (including 9 houses that were completely destroyed).
Heavy rains have caused property and infrastructure damage in many communes and towns such as Thuong Binh, Dong Tam, Viet Vinh, Huu San, Kim Ngoc, Tan Lap, Tan Thanh... with an estimated loss of over 13 billion VND.
According to Mr. Nguyen Dam Thuyen, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Bac Quang district (Ha Giang province), at the landslide site on the embankment at Km49 - National Highway 2 through Nam Tang slope, the authorities of Ha Giang province mobilized 300 people including police, soldiers, and militia along with 5 large excavators, 1 bulldozer and 8 trucks to clear and transport the soil and rocks.
However, as of the afternoon of September 29th, the road had still not been cleared, and traffic between Ha Giang and Tuyen Quang provinces remained completely paralyzed. The estimated volume of earth and rocks is over 10,000 m³ (the previous report stated 3,000 m³ ). It is estimated that it will take two days to clear the landslide.
According to authorities, the number of people buried at the landslide site at Km49 on National Highway 2 may still increase. The Ha Giang Provincial Police are mobilizing additional officers to urgently search for people in the buried houses.
Authorities are urging anyone whose relatives were passing through the area at that time and are currently unreachable or missing to immediately report to the Fire and Rescue Police (telephone number 114) or the nearest local authorities.
Previously, as reported by SGGP newspaper, at around 9:00 AM on September 29th, a large section of hillside with a massive amount of soil and rocks from the embankment on National Highway 2 - at Km49, through the Nặm Tạng slope, Việt Vinh commune, Bắc Quang district (Hà Giang province) - collapsed onto the residential area and road surface after heavy rain lasting from night until morning.
This is a vital artery connecting Tuyen Quang province with Ha Giang province. A section of the highway, over 300 meters long, was covered by thousands of cubic meters of earth and rocks, completely paralyzing traffic for hours. The soil and rocks spilled into the stream, blocking the water flow and causing it to rise to a depth of 1 meter. Witnesses reported that the landslide, along with the floodwaters, swept away one passenger bus, one truck, and three cars; buried four houses, and affected 15 others.
According to the People's Committee of Bac Quang district, landslides not only occurred on National Highway 2, but also on Provincial Road 177, with over 2,500 cubic meters of soil and rocks collapsing, causing traffic congestion as of the afternoon of September 29th. The Dong Tam - Tan Quang road also experienced landslides at 12 points, with a total volume of approximately 2,000 cubic meters …
