The tax authorities reviewed the timing of revenue recognition from domestic and international artistic activities, the settlement of performance fees, as well as expense documents from the management company and related legal entities. Following the investigation, Ji Chang Wook was ordered to pay back tens of billions of won in taxes. However, the exact amount of back taxes and details related to the investigation have not yet been publicly disclosed.
News that Ji Chang Wook is being ordered to pay billions of won in back taxes has caused a stir on South Korean social media, sparking much debate. Currently, the actor's representatives have not issued an official statement.
Ji Chang Wook is currently starring in the film Colony directed by Yeon Sang Ho alongside actors Jun Ji Hyun, Koo Kyo Hwan, Shin Hyun Been, and Kim Shin Rok. His current management company is Spring Company, reportedly founded by the actor's manager.
Recently, the South Korean entertainment industry has seen a series of investigations into the taxation of single-member companies established by artists. Actors Lee Yi Kyung and Lee Min Ki both admitted on May 12th and May 20th that they were subject to back taxes related to the operation of their private companies. However, both maintained that this was merely a difference in interpretation of tax laws, not intentional concealment or tax evasion.
Previously, actors Lee Ha Nee, Yoo Yeon Seok, Lee Joon Gi, and Jo Jin Woong were also subject to significant tax arrears in cases involving similar legal entities.
