Reduce the divorce rate.

(PLVN) - According to a recently published official report, the rate of divorce and separation among Vietnamese people each year accounts for approximately 2.6% of the population. In 2023 alone, it is estimated that there were more than 60,000 divorce cases nationwide, equivalent to about 30% of the total number of married couples.

The number of divorces has tended to increase over the years, with the proportion of women initiating divorce proceedings becoming increasingly higher than that of men. This reflects the impact of changing perceptions and lifestyles; the market economy has deeply penetrated family life; and its impact on marital life.

The 2024 mid-term census on population and housing shows that 2.9% of the urban population is divorced, with the highest concentration in the 40-49 age group. Nationwide, there are currently over 2.3 million people who are divorced or separated. The divorce rate is higher in urban areas than in rural areas, at 2.9% and 2.4% respectively.

By region, the Southeast region has the highest number of divorced and separated people with nearly 560,000, followed by the Mekong Delta with over 521,700. The localities with the highest number of divorced and separated people are Ho Chi Minh City with over 263,300 and Hanoi with over 146,400.

And typically, after every divorce, there are more or less psychological traumas and problems; and the most significant consequence is the incomplete development of the children.

Commenting on the aforementioned figures, during yesterday morning's (December 9th) National Assembly discussion, one representative remarked: "These are alarming figures, reflecting the fragility of marriage in the current context." This female representative particularly noted that children are the group most severely affected by parental divorce. This is considered one of the reasons for the increasing trend of juvenile crime. This reality demands solutions to reduce divorce, especially among young people.

There are only a few reasons to get married, but countless reasons to divorce. Therefore, this representative argued that mediation, including mediation at home, at the grassroots level, and in court, plays a crucial role in mending relationships between couples facing the risk of separation. This activity needs more attention, with solutions to strengthen the enforcement of the Law on Mediation at the grassroots level and amend and supplement new regulations to suit reality; improving policies and benefits for mediators to attract capable and experienced individuals to participate. The work of judges and courts should not only focus on dividing property or child custody, but when handling cases, the primary goal should be reconciliation and reunification, so that spouses can reassess their conflicts, resolve them, build a happy family, and care for their children.

Some other opinions suggest that, in addition to addressing the root of the problem, we need to strengthen education on marriage and family knowledge for young people from their time in school; and provide counseling and training classes on marriage skills before marriage… When no one has the mentality of "getting married just because they've reached a certain age"; when marriages are based on love, compatibility, and responsibility; then conflicts in married life will certainly decrease, and the number of divorces will be reduced.
