Reduce the divorce rate

(PLVN) - According to a recently published official report, the rate of Vietnamese people getting divorced or separated each year accounts for about 2.6% of the population. In 2023 alone, it is estimated that the country will have more than 60,000 divorces, equivalent to about 30% of the total number of married couples.

The number of divorces tends to increase over the years, in which the rate of women filing for divorce is higher than that of men. This reflects the impact of today's different concepts and lifestyles; the market economy has penetrated deeply into family life, affecting married life.

The 2024 mid-term population and housing survey showed that 2.9% of the urban population was divorced, most concentrated in the 40-49 age group. The country currently has more than 2.3 million divorced and separated people. The divorce rate in urban areas is higher than in rural areas, 2.9% and 2.4% respectively.

By region, the Southeast region has the highest number of divorced and separated people with nearly 560,000 people, followed by the Mekong Delta with more than 521,700 people. The locality with the highest number of divorced and separated people is Ho Chi Minh City with more than 263,300 people, and Hanoi with more than 146,400 people.

And usually, after every divorce, there are more or less psychological traumas, problems; and the special consequence is the incomplete development of the children.

Assessing the above figures, at the discussion yesterday morning (December 9) of the National Assembly , a delegate commented: "These are alarming numbers, reflecting the fragility of marriage in the current context." This female delegate especially noted that children are the group most heavily affected by parental divorce. This is considered one of the reasons why juvenile crime tends to increase. This reality requires us to have solutions to limit divorce, especially among young people.

There are only a few reasons to get married, but there are countless reasons to divorce. Therefore, this delegate believes that mediation, including mediation at family, grassroots and court levels, plays an important role in mending couples at risk of breaking up. This activity needs to be given more attention with solutions to strengthen the implementation of the provisions of the Law on Mediation at grassroots level and amend and supplement new regulations to suit reality; improve policies and regimes with the team of mediators to attract capable and experienced people to participate. The activities of judges and courts are not only to divide assets or child custody, but when accepting cases, they must first aim at the goal of reconciliation and reunification so that husband and wife can together review and evaluate conflicts, resolve conflicts, build happy families, and take care of their children.

Some other opinions say that, in addition, to solve the problem from the root, we need to strengthen education on awareness of marriage and family knowledge for young people right from when they are in school; have counseling and education classes to train marriage skills before marriage... When no one has the mentality of "getting married just because they are of age"; when all marriages are based on love, compatibility, and responsibility; then certainly conflicts in married life will be less, the number of divorces will be increasingly reduced.
