The matches in the tournament were exciting.
The 2023 National Handball Championship, organized by the Department of Culture and Sports of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province in coordination with the Department of Sports and Physical Education and the Vietnam Handball Federation, took place from October 16th to 21st. The tournament attracted over 160 athletes from 8 provinces, cities, and sectors. Athletes competed for two sets of medals in two categories: men's and women's.
In the men's category, Ho Chi Minh City won the championship after defeating Hanoi in the final, with Da Nang and Yen Bai sharing third place. In the women's category, Hanoi took first place, Ho Chi Minh City came in second, and Binh Dinh and Ha Giang shared third place. Thus, Ho Chi Minh City men's team and Hanoi women's team successfully defended their championship titles from last year's tournament.
Hanoi woman successfully defends her title.
The organizers of the tournament stated that the teams had prepared thoroughly, especially those from larger localities with national team athletes, who had prepared well during major domestic and international competitions this year.
Through this tournament, the Department of Sports and Physical Education will assess the level of handball development in localities nationwide and select athletes for the national team to participate in international tournaments in 2024. At the same time, this is also an opportunity to further promote the development of handball in localities.
Handball has been incorporated into training and competitions at several universities, and some international schools have also included handball as part of their physical education programs. However, high-performance handball training in Vietnam lacks specialized investment from various organizations. Currently, the national competition system includes indoor handball, beach handball, and national youth and club handball tournaments.
