Attending the opening ceremony of the 2024 Italian Film Festival in Ho Chi Minh City were: Mr. Enrico Padula - Consul General of Italy in Ho Chi Minh City; Mr. Antonio Termenini - Artistic Director of the Asian Film Festival in Rome; Mr. Pham Quy Trong - Deputy Director, Deputy Head of the Standing Office of the Central Propaganda Department in the Southern region; Dr. Pham Huy Quang - Acting Rector of the Ho Chi Minh City University of Theatre and Film; along with representatives from universities, partners, and many artists.

The opening ceremony on the evening of September 29th featured impressive cultural performances that reflected both Italian and Vietnamese traditions.

Strengthening cultural exchange and cooperation between Vietnam and Italy.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Enrico Padula, Consul General of Italy in Ho Chi Minh City, stated that art is a source of inspiration that spreads images, culture, and people to the world . Among these, cinema is perhaps the most comprehensive, in-depth, and effective way to convey knowledge about different peoples and cultures. Cinema allows for a holistic understanding of people, objects, places, and landscapes. And through the stories told in cinema, it introduces audiences to the psychology and inner transformations of human beings.

Mr. Enrico Padula, Consul General of Italy in Ho Chi Minh City, delivered the opening remarks.

"Italian cinema has a long tradition and is considered the birthplace of this art form. The Venice Film Festival is also the oldest film festival in the world. Through the 2024 Italian Film Festival, audiences in Ho Chi Minh City in particular and Vietnam in general will have the opportunity to access the cultural and historical values, people, and beautiful, long-standing country of Italy through classic films screened as well as activities promoting Italian cinema," Mr. Enrico Padula emphasized.

Antonio Termenini, Artistic Director of the Asian Film Festival in Rome and the Italian Film Festival in Ho Chi Minh City, shared information about the film festival.

Sharing the same view as Mr. Enrico Padula, Mr. Antonio Termenini - Artistic Director of the Asian Film Festival in Rome and the Italian Film Festival in Ho Chi Minh City - added that the films presented at this year's Italian Film Festival in Ho Chi Minh City were created by renowned producers and directors not only in Italy but also around the world. At the same time, the festival also showcases new talents of contemporary Italian cinema through the screening of Italian films to the film-loving community. This annual Italian Film Festival continues the successes of previous festivals, further strengthening the long-standing cultural exchange and cooperation between Vietnam and Italy.

Dr. Pham Huy Quang, Acting Rector of the Ho Chi Minh City University of Theatre and Film, delivered a welcoming speech at the 2024 Italian Film Festival in Ho Chi Minh City.

More importantly, the film festival is taking place in the context of Ho Chi Minh City having issued a plan for the development of the cultural industry, in which cinema has been selected as a key area. Ho Chi Minh City has also officially proposed to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to include cinema in UNESCO's Creative Cities Network.

The 2024 Italian Film Festival is an opportunity for us to explore and celebrate the outstanding cinematic works of Italy, a film industry rich in tradition and creativity; and at the same time, marks the fruitful cooperation between the Ho Chi Minh City University of Theatre and Film and the Italian Consulate General.

"We believe that, through the films selected for this film festival and the accompanying activities, Vietnamese audiences will have more opportunities to learn about Italian culture and people, as well as appreciate the creativity and dedication of Italian filmmakers. More importantly, this is also an opportunity for students of the Ho Chi Minh City University of Theatre and Film and young Vietnamese directors to learn about and access contemporary Italian cinema," emphasized Dr. Pham Huy Quang.

Many activities at the Film Festival.

Following the opening ceremony, guests and audience members enjoyed the film "Io Capitano" (I Am the Captain) by director Matteo Garrone. The film tells the story of the migration journey of two brothers, Seydou Sarr and Moustapha Fall, from their hometown of Dakar, Senegal, to Sicily, Italy. And in the following days, from September 30th to October 4th, film lovers will be able to watch the remaining five films for free: "Palazzina Laf" (The Cold Rolling Mill) by director Michele Riondino; "Zamora" by director Neri Marcorè; "Quell'estate con Irène" (Summer with Irène) by director Carlo Sironi; "Rapito" (The Kidnapping) by director Marco Bellocchio; and "La Chimera" (The Unfulfilled Dream) by director Alice Rohrwacher.

In addition, the Organizing Committee is launching an "Italian Film Review Contest" for all audience members attending this year's films, running from September 29th to October 7th. There is also a short film competition on the theme "Italian Culture from a Vietnamese Perspective" for students of the Ho Chi Minh City University of Theatre and Film, with the deadline for submission being October 9th.

The 2024 Italian Film Festival in Ho Chi Minh City is organized by the Italian Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City in collaboration with the Asian Film Festival in Rome and partners such as Galaxy Cinema, the Ho Chi Minh City University of Theatre and Film, the Italian Language Department (University of Social Sciences and Humanities - Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City), VIEWSONIC, and Tran Gia Brand Development Joint Stock Company. This event takes place from September 29th to October 4th at the Galaxy cinema complex (116 Nguyen Du, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City), aiming to offer Vietnamese audiences a contemporary perspective on Italian cinema and promote Italian culture through film.
