How to extract the treasure?

The figures revealed at the exhibition "Vietnamese Cultural Heritage - Vitality from Tradition to Modernity" (currently taking place at the Thang Long Imperial Citadel - Hanoi, running until January 15, 2026) have surprised many people, highlighting the rich "treasure trove" of Vietnamese heritage.

That includes approximately 40,000 listed historical sites, over 11,000 provincial-level sites, 3,677 national-level sites, 147 special national-level sites; 37 UNESCO-listed heritage sites, and more than 300 national treasures being preserved in museums and historical sites throughout the country.

This vast treasure trove of heritage reflects the historical depth and enduring cultural identity of the Vietnamese people. From cultural and natural heritage to intangible heritage and documentary heritage, each value is the culmination of a continuous process of creation, preservation, and transmission through many generations. In the context of globalization, where cultural boundaries are increasingly blurred, heritage is the "soft identity card" that helps Vietnam affirm its unique identity and create a distinct appeal on the world cultural map.

However, possessing a vast heritage also places a heavy responsibility on our shoulders in preserving and utilizing it effectively. In recent years, numerous solutions have been implemented, ranging from preserving historical sites and promoting community involvement to integrating heritage into education and applying digital technology. These steps demonstrate the emerging mindset of sustainable development, especially for prominent, high-value heritage sites in major cities.

Frankly speaking, the overall picture still has many dark spots. Numerous historical sites are deteriorating, many intangible cultural heritages are at risk of disappearing, while the exploitation of heritage for tourism in some areas remains spontaneous and short-term. If we only view heritage as "resources to be exploited," pursuing immediate economic benefits, the risk of damaging its original value is unavoidable.

Heritage truly comes alive only when approaches are continuously renewed, made more creative and flexible, so that heritage does not remain static in museums or on paper, but continues to "live," adapt, and make practical contributions to contemporary and future life.
