Looking at the current smartphone market, users are essentially left with only two choices: buy an iPhone or choose an Android phone. No matter how much Android manufacturers try to customize the interface, its core remains dominated by Google's software decisions. However, looking back more than 10 years, consumers once had a real technological "feast" with the presence of Windows Phone, BlackBerry OS, or even Samsung's Bada operating system.

There have been phone models that have marked a turning point in the history of the smartphone industry.

Nokia 808 PureView (2012)

When it comes to ultra-high-resolution photography, many people immediately think of today's flagship phones. However, back in 2012, the Nokia 808 PureView shocked the world with its 41MP sensor, surpassing the 8MP of the iPhone 4S and Galaxy S II at the time. Even though the Symbian operating system was already past its prime, this phone left a lasting impression as a pioneer in bridging the gap between smartphones and professional cameras to an unimaginable degree.

Samsung Wave S8500 (2010)

Super AMOLED display technology is now a luxury standard, indispensable on current high-end devices. Few people know that the first device to feature this cutting-edge display technology wasn't Samsung's renowned Galaxy S series, but rather the Wave S8500 running the early Bada operating system. Launched even before the first Galaxy S model, the Wave S8500 was the first "stage" to demonstrate the superior display power of Super AMOLED compared to its contemporaries.

Nokia Lumia 520 (2013)

The early 2010s also saw the rise of iconic budget phones, paving the way for the explosion of the low-cost segment. The Nokia Lumia 520, running Windows Phone 8 and priced at just $180, became a global phenomenon, selling over 12 million units. This colorful phone proved to the entire industry that inexpensive phones could still deliver a smooth and stable experience thanks to an optimized operating system.

Nokia Lumia 1520 (2013)

At the opposite extreme to compact devices, the Lumia 1520, with its enormous 6-inch screen (at the time), redefined the nostalgic concept of a 'phablet' (a hybrid phone/tablet). Surpassing both the Galaxy Note and iPhone Plus in size, the Lumia 1520 directly challenged the competition for display space. While Windows Phone software didn't fully utilize the large screen, its robust industrial design and top-notch camera strongly promoted the large-screen trend we see today.

BlackBerry Torch 9850 (2011)

The fierce touchscreen war of that era forced even the most conservative giants to change in order to survive. The release of the BlackBerry Torch 9850 marked a historic moment when BlackBerry officially abandoned the legendary physical QWERTY keyboard in favor of a modern, purely touchscreen design. This transformation was a valuable acknowledgment from BlackBerry that capacitive touchscreens were the irreversible future of the mobile world.

HTC One M8 for Windows (2014)

Amidst a sea of Android and iOS smartphones, HTC created a unique variant by bringing the Windows Phone 8.1 operating system to its high-end hardware. The HTC One M8 for Windows boasted a sleek and luxurious unibody aluminum design, offering a fresh perspective and making its competitors – who were still struggling with plastic casings at the time – envious.

Nokia Lumia 1020 (2013)

Considered the perfect successor to the PureView photographic legacy, the Lumia 1020 boasted a 41MP sensor combined with the more modern Windows Phone 8 operating system. Equipped with back-illuminated imaging (BSI) and advanced optical image stabilization (OIS), the Lumia 1020 became a true icon of mobile photography. Its camera was so outstanding that it took until the early 2020s for cameras on modern smartphones to fully surpass it.

Conclusion

Although these unique operating systems are now a thing of the past, their legacy of hardware, design, and groundbreaking thinking remains a solid foundation for today's smartphone world.
