Leaving behind the hustle and bustle of the cities, the road leading to the mountainous areas of northeastern Quang Ninh in late December offers a different feeling. As the biting cold of the border region arrives, nature here undergoes a magical transformation.
The first destination, and also the most popular one, is the former Binh Lieu district. Often described as the "miniature Sapa" of Quang Ninh, this area not only boasts a cold climate in winter but is also nổi prominent for its vast fields of white reeds stretching across the mountain slopes. The hills, which are lush green in summer, are now covered in the white blossoms of the reeds, creating a gentle and peaceful scene.

Tran Van Nam, a freelance photographer from Hanoi who has spent five consecutive winters photographing in the highlands of Quang Ninh, shared while standing on top of border marker 1305: “I have traveled to many places, but winter in Binh Lieu has a very unique charm. It's a blend of the majestic beauty of the border and the poetic charm of the vegetation. Standing here early in the morning, when the fog is still thick, you feel like you're standing on the nine layers of clouds. The feeling of conquering the 'dinosaur's spine' amidst the cold of 5-6 degrees Celsius is an unforgettable experience.”
The development of tourism in Quang Ninh's highlands is not a coincidence. It is the result of the province's persistent investment in transportation infrastructure over many years. The completion of the Van Don - Mong Cai expressway, along with the upgrading of previously existing inter-commune and inter-district roads, has significantly shortened travel time from the lowlands to the mountainous regions.

According to data from the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the number of visitors to the northeastern region of the province in the fourth quarter of 2025 showed significant growth, with transportation infrastructure playing a crucial role. Currently, tourists only need a few hours to travel from the province's urban center to the highland areas, instead of having to travel all day as before. Rest stops and support services have also received investment, contributing to ensuring safety and convenience for tourists.
According to Mr. Bui Hong Minh, Deputy Director of the Quang Ninh Department of Construction, investing in the synchronous development of technical and social infrastructure not only serves the goal of industrial economic development but also forms the core foundation for unlocking tourism potential in remote and disadvantaged areas. In particular, it aims to connect modern coastal cities with highland eco-tourism areas, creating a diverse value chain.
If Binh Lieu is a heroic borderland epic, then the area of Tien Yen district (formerly) is a quiet and profound melody. Winter in the old town of Tien Yen evokes a sense of nostalgia with its blend of Chinese and French architectural styles. In the misty, foggy weather, strolling through the small streets and enjoying a steaming bowl of pho or a piece of fragrant braised pork belly is the best way to experience the rhythm of life here.
Especially on Saturday evenings, when Tien Yen pedestrian street is open, visitors can experience interesting cultural activities at various folk game corners: a display of ethnic costumes, painting, sculpting, free reading, calligraphy corner, or music and street dancing corner… Along with that, visitors can also enjoy characteristic dishes with the rich flavors of the Eastern region, made by the people of Tien Yen themselves.

Mr. Hoang Van Quan, a tourist from Hanoi, shared: “I’ve experienced many pedestrian streets in provinces and cities across the country, but Tien Yen pedestrian street truly offers wonderful experiences. With its unique architecture and many attractive cultural and artistic activities, Tien Yen pedestrian street allows visitors to immerse themselves in the lively and cheerful atmosphere of a new space that is also full of nostalgia. We will definitely return here to experience more of the wonderful atmosphere and delicious food on the poetic old streets of Tien Yen.”
Besides the ancient town of Tien Yen, winter tourism in Dai Duc (Dong Ngu commune) also offers unique experiences. This area still retains the pristine, peaceful beauty of the Northeast mountainous region, closely linked to the cultural life of the San Chi ethnic minority. Tourists can participate in community tourism activities, enjoy the cool air, admire the terraced rice fields after the harvest or in the misty morning air.

Notably, the "smart village" model is being piloted in Dai Duc, making it easier for tourists to access information and tourism services through digital platforms. Ms. Chiu Nhi Mui, the owner of a San Chi homestay, said: "Previously, there were very few tourists in the winter. Since the internet and promotional channels, more tourists have become aware of our place. They enjoy sitting by the fireplace, listening to Soong Co folk songs, and savoring traditional meals of the local people."
A winter exploration of Quang Ninh's northeastern region would be incomplete without visiting Ba Che, famous for its cinnamon and tea hills. Winter in Ba Che brings with it the distinctive aroma of cinnamon that permeates the villages. Currently, the province is investing in the construction of irrigation systems and multi-purpose reservoirs, ensuring water security while creating ecological landscapes to support tourism development. In the former Ba Che district, visitors can participate in experiential activities related to environmental protection, visit environmentally friendly production models, and learn about solutions for adapting to climate change. This aligns with Quang Ninh's goal of sustainable tourism development.

Despite challenges related to seasonality and service quality, tourism in Quang Ninh's mountainous region is gradually overcoming obstacles. With strong political determination and the implementation of appropriate policies, the province is focusing on attracting high-quality human resources to its mountainous and border areas. The goal is that by 2030, the Northeast region will not only play a crucial role in national defense and security but also become a competitive cultural and ecological tourism destination.
A winter adventure in the northeastern region of Quang Ninh is not just about enjoying the scenery, but also about experiencing the changes and vitality of a land that is developing day by day. Amidst the mountains and forests of Binh Lieu, with the sounds of folk songs in Ba Che, or with a glass of traditional rice wine in Tien Yen, visitors can easily feel the sincerity, hospitality, and potential for progress of the land and people at the northernmost point of the country.
