A rare kidney tumor was discovered during a routine health checkup.

Regular health checkups not only help monitor overall health but also provide an opportunity to detect many dangerous diseases early, including rare and asymptomatic ones.

The case of Ms. NTC (41 years old, Ho Chi Minh City) is a typical example of this benefit. Ms. C. came to MEDLATEC Go Vap Multi-Specialty Clinic for a routine general health check-up.

She herself had no unusual symptoms, her health was stable, and there was no significant medical history in her family. During the examination, the doctor ordered basic tests, including abdominal, thyroid, and breast ultrasounds.

Renal angiomyolipoma can also be associated with hereditary tuberous sclerosis, appearing as multiple tumors in both kidneys, or occurs in women with certain rare lung diseases.

Unexpected abdominal ultrasound results revealed a suspected angiomyolipoma (AML) in the left kidney. This finding is particularly important because most AML cases develop silently, without early symptoms. If not detected early, the tumor can grow large and cause dangerous complications, even life-threatening ones.

According to Dr. Pham Dang Hoai Nam, a family medicine physician at MEDLATEC Multi-Specialty Clinic, renal angiomyolipoma is the most common benign kidney tumor, but this should not be taken lightly. "The tumor can grow rapidly, causing compression that impairs kidney function or causing blood vessels to dilate, rupture, and lead to dangerous bleeding," Dr. Nam emphasized.

Renal angiomyolipoma can also be associated with hereditary tuberous sclerosis, appearing as multiple tumors in both kidneys, or occurs in women with certain rare lung diseases.

Small tumors are usually asymptomatic, but can grow in size by an average of 4 cm per year. Tumors larger than 5 cm or with aneurysms significantly increase the risk of rupture, with a cumulative risk of bleeding of approximately 10% in men and 20% in women.

Diagnosis of AML is primarily based on imaging techniques. Ultrasound is the initial screening method, sensitive to the fatty component of the tumor but limited when the tumor is close to the kidney surface.

Computed tomography (CT) scans provide a detailed assessment of tumor structure, size, and composition, while magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is safer, clearly identifies fat deposits, but takes longer and sometimes requires sedation or anesthesia.

Ms. C's case demonstrates that with just a simple ultrasound, many underlying medical conditions can be detected early, before the patient notices any symptoms.

Most people with AML are asymptomatic, but as the tumor grows larger, patients may experience symptoms such as abdominal or lower back pain in the kidney area, blood in the urine, a palpable abnormal mass, high blood pressure, or a feeling of heaviness or fullness in the abdomen due to compression of nearby organs.

Dr. Nam advises that when any unusual symptoms appear, people should go to a reputable medical facility for examination and appropriate treatment advice. Early detection and intervention not only help limit dangerous complications but also preserve kidney function.

In addition, the doctor emphasized the importance of maintaining a habit of regular health check-ups 1-2 times a year, especially for adults, in order to proactively protect health and detect potential diseases early.
