The Vrain automatic rain gauge system also recorded rain in many localities across the country, with heavy rain continuing to occur in the northern mountainous region. The highest rainfall measured by this system was 148.6mm in Pa Thang (Lai Chau) - classified as very heavy rain.
Besides Lai Chau, some measuring stations had notable rainfall such as: Xuan Minh 1 (Tuyen Quang) 101.2mm; Chuc Bai Son (Quang Ninh) 83.2mm; Lang Quan (Tuyen Quang) 61.8mm; Ban Cam (Lao Cai) 62.8mm; Gia Vien (Ninh Binh) 65mm; Vinh Thinh (Thanh Hoa) 91.4mm.
According to SGGP Newspaper, this morning, July 1, many provinces in the Northeast region and the midland and mountainous areas of the North were covered by a large (humid) rain mass that lasted all night. The center of Hanoi had very heavy rain from the night of June 30, at times pouring down. By about 5am this morning, the rain had temporarily subsided but was still persistent in a drizzle.
In the southern province of Hung Yen, heavy rain started at 1am and continued until morning. People in localities such as Hai Phong, Hung Yen, Bac Ninh, Ninh Binh, Quang Ninh… all reported heavy rain.
Many roads are deeply flooded, making travel difficult. A major landslide occurred on the Lao Cai - Sa Pa route, causing traffic to be completely disrupted. Authorities have advised people to postpone traveling through this area this morning.
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, this prolonged rain is due to a strong low pressure trough combined with a low vortex at an altitude of 3,000 - 5,000m in the Northern region. The total rainfall for the period is commonly 100-300mm, some places may exceed 500mm.
In the Central and Central Highlands, rainfall was mostly moderate, ranging from 30-45mm. Some places had low rainfall such as Lang Khe (Nghe An) 18.6mm. Only Ha Tinh, the South Central region and most of the South had no rain during the observation period. The Mekong Delta, Ho Chi Minh City and the Southeast were almost completely dry or had insignificant showers.
The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that from early morning of July 1 to early morning of July 3, the Northern region and Thanh Hoa will continue to have moderate rain, heavy rain and thunderstorms, locally very heavy rain with total rainfall of 50-140mm, some places may exceed 250mm.
During the day and night of July 1, the area from Nghe An to Lam Dong and the South will also have scattered showers and thunderstorms, with rainfall ranging from 10-30mm, with some places over 70mm, mainly concentrated in the evening and at night. It is expected that from July 3, heavy rain in the North will gradually decrease.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has directed to reduce flood discharge from Tuyen Quang Hydropower Reservoir. From 6 p.m. on June 30, the company operating this reservoir has closed one bottom discharge gate, maintaining only two gates, to reduce flood pressure on downstream areas.
