TPO - Nguyen Thi An and Hua Hong Ngoc, born in the South and the North, are valedictorians of Thu Dau Mot University (Binh Duong). They share the same aspiration to study well to escape poverty and become teachers to bring knowledge to less fortunate students like themselves.
Nguyen Thi An was born and raised in the poor countryside of Thieu Toan commune (Thieu Hoa district, Thanh Hoa province). Since childhood, An did not have a father by her side and only had her mother as her sole support, but then an incident happened when her mother got a serious illness (lung disease).
With no health left, An and her mother had to depend on her elderly grandparents to live. Despite their old age and frail health, the grandparents still struggled to do farm work to care for their sick daughter and grandchild.
Understanding the hardships of her grandparents, An has tried to help since she was young. While her friends were on summer vacation or traveling , she asked for a part-time job to reduce the burden on her grandparents.
Little An was aware of her difficult family circumstances early on, so she tried hard to study hard to not disappoint her teachers and grandparents. During her 12 years of high school in her hometown, she always achieved high results. In the 2024 high school graduation exam, An excellently scored 27/30 points in block C00, becoming valedictorian of the largest public university in Binh Duong.
An decided to leave his hometown for Binh Duong to pursue his dream of becoming an elementary school teacher.
“During my school years, I always dreamed of becoming a teacher. Now, that dream is about to come true. I am one of the students majoring in education at the school,” An shared.
Talking about the reason for choosing teaching, An said she wanted to impart knowledge to children and have the opportunity to help those in difficult circumstances like herself.
"To do that, I believe that with constant effort and enthusiasm, I will be able to do it" - An confided.
Study to… change your destiny
Since childhood, Hua Hong Ngoc (resident of Ward 1, Cu Chi Town, Cu Chi District, Ho Chi Minh City) has lived in poverty. Her mother's modest factory salary is the main source of income for Ngoc's family. The company has recently encountered difficulties and had to cut working hours, affecting her mother's income.
Meanwhile, Ngoc's 85-year-old grandmother is seriously ill and has to undergo dialysis every week at Cu Chi Hospital. Her father does not have a stable job and has to stay home to take Ngoc's two younger siblings to school and take care of her grandmother. Due to the difficult family situation, Ngoc wanted to quit school many times to go to work and help raise her younger siblings and grandmother, but her parents did not agree.
Encouraged by her teachers and family, Ngoc has continuously strived to study with the hope of escaping poverty. This female student finished 12 years of high school with very high results in the high school graduation exam, becoming valedictorian of the Education Department of Thu Dau Mot University.

Since the day she passed the university entrance exam and came to Binh Duong to study, Ngoc has not dared to buy anything other than the most essential things for studying.
Sharing the reason for pursuing her studies, Ngoc said: “With the dream of becoming an educator, a teacher in the future, I always try my best to study. I think that only through studying can I change my fate. I always tell myself that I must always try my best not only for myself, my family... but also to be able to help many people in the same situation as me in the future.”
The female student shared that receiving a scholarship from the Valedictorian Support Program organized by Tien Phong newspaper will be a great motivation, giving her more strength and helping her to make more efforts in her studies.
"This support also reduces the financial burden on my family, which is facing many difficulties," Ngoc said.
The program to honor and award the Valedictorian Scholarship is expected to take place on January 4, 2025. In Hanoi, the program will be held at the headquarters of Tien Phong newspaper. In Ho Chi Minh City, the program will be held at Hong Bang International University. |
