The iPhone Air is currently Apple's thinnest smartphone. However, based on rumors, that record will soon be broken when a foldable iPhone is released next year.

Unless something changes, the foldable iPhone will be launched in late 2026. Since it doesn't have an official name yet, the device is tentatively called the iPhone Fold.

Currently, the iPhone Air is 5.64 mm thick. Back in March, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted the iPhone Fold would be only 4.5-4.8 mm thick when unfolded, and 9-9.5 mm when folded.

For comparison, when unfolded, the iPhone Fold is about 20% thinner than the iPhone Air. It's also thinner than other models like the iPhone 17 (7.95 mm), iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max (8.75 mm).

Even when folded, the iPhone Fold is only slightly thicker than the iPhone 17 Pro Max. This means users will have an iPhone that's comparable to the Pro series when placed in a pocket, and very thin when unfolded.

Kuo predicts the iPhone Fold will be positioned in the premium segment, with a price tag potentially exceeding $2,000. Its slim design will also come with the removal of Face ID, and a possible return of Touch ID.

Analysts believe the iPhone Fold's thickness and internal space are too limited for Face ID components, at least in the first generation. Apple plans to integrate Touch ID into the power button, similar to some iPad models.

As of now, 9to5Mac believes Apple has finalized the specifications for the iPhone Fold. While there are no new rumors, data from Kuo is generally reliable.

With its book-folding design, Kuo predicts the iPhone Fold will have a 7.8-inch inner screen and a 5.5-inch outer screen. This means the device will be similar to the iPad mini when unfolded. This tablet line has an 8.3-inch screen size.

Analysts predict Apple may adopt new technology to reduce the crease on the iPhone Fold's screen. This could also be a differentiating factor compared to competitors.

Regarding the cameras, rumors suggest the device will have a total of four cameras: two rear cameras, a selfie camera when unfolded, and a selfie camera when folded.

In a recent Power On newsletter, Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman added that the iPhone Fold's design will resemble "two titanium iPhone Airs side-by-side," reinforcing previous rumors about the product's thinness.

"In other words, this is an ultra-thin device and a design achievement for Apple. It will also be very expensive compared to previous iPhones," Gurman shared. He emphasized that the device's price could start from $2,000 or more.

Gurman revealed that Foxconn's factories in China are still producing the iPhone Fold, despite some rumors suggesting the product might be assembled in India.

According to MacRumors , the iPhone Fold will enter a market that has been dominated by Samsung for years. Although rumored for a long time, Apple took many years to perfect and launch the product.
