Launching the Action Month for the Elderly and the program "Bright eyes for the elderly"

On the morning of September 27 in Hanoi, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Association of the Elderly coordinated with the Ministry of Health and the Military Commercial Joint Stock Bank (MB) to organize the launching ceremony of the Month of Action for the Elderly in 2025.

Delegates pressed the button to launch the humanitarian program "Bright eyes for the elderly" for the 2025 - 2028 period.

Attending the launching ceremony were Politburo member, Party Central Committee Secretary, Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Do Van Chien; Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long, Chairman of the National Committee on the Elderly in Vietnam; representatives of leaders of ministries, departments, branches, organizations at the central and local levels, and international organizations.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Comrade Do Van Chien emphasized that the Party and State always respect, care for, honor and create conditions for the elderly to continue to contribute their intelligence and experience to the country's development. Thoroughly implementing the guiding viewpoint of General Secretary To Lam "The elderly are a precious asset of the nation, a tall tree with great shade" . Comrade Do Van Chien called on all levels, sectors and society to pay more attention to the work of the elderly, from perfecting legal policies, digital transformation, green transformation, to starting a business and creating jobs. At the same time, mobilize the community to join hands to support the Program "Bright eyes for the elderly" , especially for the elderly in remote areas, islands and ethnic minorities.

Chairman of the Vietnam Association of the Elderly Nguyen Thanh Binh said this is the 11th year of organizing the Action Month, with many diverse activities: sports , culture, arts, health care, legal advice, visiting and giving gifts to the elderly in difficult circumstances.

This year, the theme of the United Nations International Day of Older Persons is "Older persons drive local and global action" with the message "Our aspirations - Our well-being - Our rights" , suggesting many new directions for this work.

Currently, the whole country has more than 1 million elderly people participating in grassroots work, over 9 million people directly involved in production labor, many of whom have been awarded the title of Labor Hero in the renovation period.

The country also has more than 9,000 intergenerational self-help clubs and 91,000 cultural, sports and wellness clubs, attracting about 9 million members. The elderly are also the core force in preserving and promoting national cultural identity.

Launching the program "Bright eyes for the elderly"

A highlight is the "Bright Eyes for the Elderly" Program with the goal that by 2028, over 90% of the elderly will have their eyes examined and screened, and 100% of cataract cases will be treated. In the 2020-2024 period, the program examined and consulted 3.6 million people; performed cataract surgery for over 541,000 people; and donated 258,000 glasses to improve vision, with a total cost of over 513 billion VND.

The launching ceremony affirmed the determination of the Party, State and the whole society in caring for and promoting the role of the elderly - a force rich in intelligence and experience, continuing to accompany the whole nation in the cause of building and defending the Fatherland.

On this occasion, Party and State leaders presented gifts to people over 90 years old and honored organizations and individuals who have made many contributions to work for the elderly.
