Phuc Khanh Primary and Secondary School No. 1 (Phuc Khanh Commune, Lao Cai Province) has 311 students this year. The school's opening ceremony for the 2025-2026 school year will take place at 7:00 a.m. on September 5. After the school ceremony, from 7:55 a.m. onwards, students will attend the national opening ceremony organized by the Ministry of Education and Training via live television.

Mr. Pham Duc Vinh, the school’s principal, said that this year the school has had a number of students who have suffered great losses in their families. “After the incident, students often become more quiet and less talkative, but on the contrary, they are more diligent and have a greater will to study than before,” he shared.

A new point this school year is the application of digital technology and artificial intelligence in teaching and learning. “The school has trained teachers to use tools such as ChatGPT, Google... in preparing lessons and designing learning games. Thanks to that, teachers save time, and students begin to get acquainted with new tools,” said Mr. Vinh.

Regarding maintaining student numbers, he said that thanks to the boarding policy and support from the State, students in disadvantaged areas have accommodation and living conditions guaranteed so they do not have to move much. Since the beginning of August, teachers have been present at the school to prepare the facilities, and students have returned since August 27 to stabilize the order, ready to enter the new school year.

At Lang Nu school, part of Phuc Khanh Primary and Secondary School No. 1, there are currently two grades, 1 and 2. This school year, grade 1 has only 6 students, so they are arranged to study at the main campus 6 km away. Grade 2 has 14 students, and teachers come directly to the school to teach.

Among the students, there are two special cases: Hoang Gia Bao (grade 3, boarding at the main campus) and Hoang Ngoc Lan (grade 2C, studying at Lang Nu school). Both of them lost their parents after the terrible landslide in Lang Nu. Lan also lost two older brothers and a cousin, becoming the head of the house in the village.

Ms. Hoang Thi Van, homeroom teacher of class 2C, said: “Lan lives with her grandmother. There are many days when no one takes care of her. She comes to class with a dirty face, and the teachers have to wash her face for her. Lan has a quiet personality and doesn’t talk much. On days when it rains heavily, she often panics, is scared, and runs to hug her teacher because of the fear of landslides.”

However, when entering the new school year, Lan is still eager to meet her friends and teachers. She is excited about the new books and notebooks that were prepared before the opening ceremony. “We and the departments and organizations of the commune have come to encourage, support, and fully equip the children with school supplies so that they can confidently go to school from the beginning of August,” Ms. Van shared.

Gia Bao is currently a boarding student, and is picked up and dropped off by his grandmother or aunt every week. Lan continues to study at Lang Nu school, where she is cared for by teachers and her grandmother, and guided step by step to become more steadfast after the incident.

The dirt road leading to Trung Son Secondary School (Trung Son Commune, Tuyen Quang Province) winds along the hillside, the early morning mist covers the path. The footsteps of students mixed with cheerful laughter brightens the space. In the small schoolyard nestled among the hills, teachers and students have prepared colorful flags and flowers early.

In the lingering mist, the opening drum rang out, marking the start of a new school year full of hope.

Attending the ceremony were Ms. Duong Minh Nguyet, Secretary of Tuyen Quang Provincial Youth Union, and local government leaders. On this occasion, the Provincial Youth Union presented the school with 5,000 notebooks, 30 sets of Ao Dai, 50 cartons of milk and many gifts to encourage students in the highlands.

Mr. Nong Van Ha, Principal of Trung Son Secondary School, said that this school year the school has 301 students, including 76 in grade 6 alone. “Many students have difficult circumstances and have to stay near the school for convenience in studying. Before the opening day, teachers went to each student’s house to encourage them to come to class,” said Mr. Ha.

Ms. Doan Hong Thanh, homeroom teacher of class 6B, shared that out of 38 students in the class, 18 are from poor households. Before the new school year, she had to go to each village to persuade parents to let their children go to school. Then Van Thien is an example. Thien is the youngest of three children. His two older brothers, a few years older, have dropped out of school to work to help their parents. If it weren't for her persistence in persuading him, Thien would probably have left school early. "He is nearsighted, so I took him to get his eyes checked and fitted with glasses to help him keep up with his studies," Ms. Thanh said.

Sitting in the new class, Thien shyly said: “I am very happy to go to school. My house is in Kien Thiet commune, far from school, so I live in a rented house, and the government supports my rent. I dream of studying Information Technology in the future.”

Dien Bien students had to open the new school year at the commune People's Committee because the school had not been repaired yet.

The opening ceremony of the new school year of Chieng So Ethnic Boarding Secondary School (Muong Luan Commune, Dien Bien) was held at the headquarters of the People's Committee of Muong Luan Commune (former headquarters of Chieng So Commune) because the school was heavily affected by the flood.

Mr. Nguyen Danh Hy, the school's principal, said: "The whole school has about 530 students, of which more than 300 are boarding students. By the afternoon of September 4, all preparations for the opening day were completed." Due to large cracks appearing in 6 two-story classrooms, the school was forced to relocate all classrooms. The local government repaired and renovated the cultural house, gymnasium, hall and old offices into 6 classrooms to serve the new school year.

Previously, on August 1, floodwaters flooded the entire school campus, causing severe damage to the facilities and teaching and learning equipment. To ensure the new school year goes smoothly, teachers had to work many times harder, both to arrange accommodation for boarding students and to clean and decorate the space for the opening ceremony to be more solemn and warm.
