Determining a long-term vision for conservation, integration, and sustainable development of Hoi An Ancient Town

On October 20, in Hoi An ward, the People's Committee of Da Nang city held a conference to summarize the overall investment plan for preserving, restoring and promoting the value of the world cultural heritage of Hoi An ancient town associated with tourism development, period 2012-2025.

Hoi An ancient town is increasingly becoming a favorite destination for domestic and foreign tourists.

Since 2012, Hoi An city, Quang Nam province (old), now Da Nang city, has proactively identified 18 detailed projects, actively mobilized and made use of resources, and allocated the budget to implement the work of preserving and promoting the value of the World Cultural Heritage of Hoi An Ancient Town.

To date, 13/18 projects have been completed with a total implementation cost of more than 156 billion VND.

Hoi An becomes a bright spot in the work of preserving and promoting values.

Up to now, the relic system in Hoi An has 1 special national relic, 27 national relics, 50 provincial relics, and 19 relics on the protection list for the 2024-2029 period.

In addition, the State invested from the budget for 75 projects; of which, there were 26 projects in the heritage area; 49 projects outside the heritage area with a total cost of nearly 299 billion VND.

The People's Committee of Hoi An City (old) has issued support mechanisms for the restoration and embellishment of private and collective relics, applicable to both inside and outside the heritage area. During the period 2012-2024, these mechanisms supported 174 relics, with a total budget of over 38 billion VND, of which the relic owners contributed over 7 billion VND.

Vice Chairwoman of the People's Committee of Da Nang City Nguyen Thi Anh Thi said that after nearly 13 years of implementation, the Master Plan for the preservation, restoration and promotion of the value of Hoi An Ancient Town associated with the development of Hoi An City and tourism in the period 2012-2025 has created comprehensive changes in the work of preserving, restoring and promoting the value of Hoi An Ancient Town.

The system of relics has been renovated and restored, many structures have escaped the risk of serious degradation. Hoi An continues to be one of the top destinations for Vietnamese and world tourism, and is also a successful model of heritage conservation associated with sustainable development.

Speaking at the conference, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Dao Cuong said that the 2012-2025 planning period is one of the necessary and important legal bases on the journey of preserving and promoting the heritage value of Hoi An Ancient Town. Regarding the issue of preserving and promoting heritage values ​​in the context of implementing a two-level local government, in re-establishing the planning, the People's Committee of Da Nang City needs to inherit the basic orientations that Hoi An City and Quang Nam Province have previously built around the axis: Ecology-Culture-Tourism; update new trends and recommendations of UNESCO; regulations of the Law on Cultural Heritage.

“Hoi An ancient town is a living heritage city, requiring perseverance, carefulness and science in the work of preserving and promoting heritage values. More than 400 years ago, Hoi An took advantage of its advantages to become a famous international commercial port city. Now, Hoi An also needs to take advantage of the advantages brought about after being under the jurisdiction of Da Nang city to break through and become a world-leading model of heritage preservation in contemporary life,” said Deputy Minister Hoang Dao Cuong.
