According to the European Union's statistical agency, Eurostat, the total number of nights stayed in tourist accommodations across the EU in 2024 reached 3.02 billion, a 2.7% increase compared to 2023, surpassing the 3 billion mark for the first time.
Of this total, nearly 65% stayed in hotels and similar establishments; 23.7% stayed in short-term accommodations such as rental apartments and resorts; and 13.5% stayed in campsites and parks.
In terms of increases by country, the Republic of Cyprus and Malta led with increases of 14.5% and 14.4% respectively, followed by Latvia with 7.4%.
Conversely, Finland and France recorded slight declines – -0.7% and -0.6% respectively – while Belgium and Sweden remained almost unchanged, rising by 0.3%.
The majority of international overnight stays were by tourists from other EU countries (61.6%) and other European countries (21.3%), while only 16.4% of international overnight stays were by tourists from other regions of the world .
Of these, visitors from North America accounted for 7.5% of the total international overnight stays, followed by Asia with 4.9%, Central and South America with 2.3%, Oceania with 1.0%, and Africa with 0.8%.
These figures demonstrate that the EU continues to be an attractive destination for both domestic and international tourists, and reflect the sustained recovery of the European tourism industry after years of disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and economic fluctuations.
