According to the European Union (EU) statistics agency - Eurostat, the total number of nights spent in tourist establishments across the EU in 2024 will reach 3.02 billion, up 2.7% compared to 2023, surpassing the 3 billion mark for the first time.
Of this total, nearly 65% were staying in hotels and similar establishments; 23.7% in short-term accommodation establishments such as rental apartments and resorts; and 13.5% in campsites and parks.
In terms of increases by country, Cyprus and Malta led with increases of 14.5% and 14.4% respectively, followed by Latvia with 7.4%.
In contrast, Finland and France recorded slight declines – -0.7% and -0.6% respectively, while Belgium and Sweden remained almost stable, up 0.3%.
The majority of international visitor nights were spent by visitors from other EU countries (61.6%) and other European countries (21.3%), while only 16.4% of international visitor nights were spent by visitors from other regions of the world .
Of these, visitors from North America accounted for 7.5% of total international stay nights, followed by Asia with 4.9%, Central and South America 2.3%, Oceania 1.0% and Africa 0.8%.
These figures show that the EU continues to be an attractive destination for both domestic and international tourists, and reflect the sustainable recovery of the European tourism industry after many years of being impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and economic fluctuations./.
