Nguyen Thi Oanh mentored her younger teammates, and together they pulled ahead of their rivals before ultimately winning the gold medal.
On the evening of December 13th, the attention of Vietnamese sports fans was focused on the 5,000m athletics race at Supachalasai Stadium (Bangkok, Thailand). "Golden Girl," SEA Games record holder Nguyen Thi Oanh, competed in the final of her specialty event.
Competing alongside the 1995-born athlete in this event was her younger teammate, Le Thi Tuyet. The two Vietnamese athletes quickly pulled ahead, leaving the rest of the pack far behind. In the final laps, Nguyen Thi Oanh switched places with her teammate, running behind Le Thi Tuyet. Only when there was more than one lap left did the defending champion make a strong surge forward.

Nguyen Thi Oanh finished with a time of 16 minutes 27.14 seconds. The familiar scene from previous SEA Games was recreated. The female athlete from Bac Giang province won the gold medal in the 5,000m race for the fifth consecutive time at the regional sports event.
Even more interesting is that in all five times Nguyen Thi Oanh won the SEA Games gold medal in this event, the runner-up was also her teammate. Pham Thi Hue won silver medals in 2017 and 2019. Pham Thi Hong Le finished second in 2022 and 2023. This time, it's Le Thi Tuyet's turn to be the runner-up.
This detail also confirms the absolute dominance of Vietnamese runners in the women's 5,000m race.

This is not the first time Vietnamese athletes have shared the top two positions and left the rest far behind in this event.

Le Thi Tuyet winning the silver medal is also a positive sign for Vietnamese athletics. She is 9 years younger than Nguyen Thi Oanh and can certainly follow in her footsteps when this legend retires.

Nguyen Thi Oanh and Vietnamese athletics have been unrivaled in the women's 5,000m race for five consecutive SEA Games.
